Cannes 2025: Joaquin Phoenix Moves To Tears As Eddington Receives A Big Standing Ovation

Director Ari Aster made his Cannes debut with the premiere of his latest film Eddington at the 78th edition of the festival on Friday, May 16. He was joined on the red carpet by the stellar star cast, including Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, Pedro Pascal and Austin Butler.

As per Deadline, Eddington got nearly seven-minute standing ovation at the Lumiere theater, that moved Phoenix to tears. The video of him getting emotional has been doing the rounds on social media.

For the unversed, Eddington is part of the Cannes Film Festival's main competition section, where it is competing with Wes Anderson, Lucia Ducournau and Lynne Ramsay's films.

Aster said, "I don바카라™t know what you think. Thank you for being here. I feel very privileged to be here. It바카라™s a dream come true. Thank you so much for having me. And, I don바카라™t know 바카라” sorry? I don바카라™t know.바카라ť

He added, 바카라śThis was a great experience. I love all these people around me."

About Eddington

Set in a small town in New Mexico during the COVID pandemic, Eddington is a thriller/dark comedy where Joaquin Phoenix plays small-town Sheriff Joe Cross and Pascal plays Mayor Ted Garcia.

According to its official synopsis, the film follows 바카라śa standoff between a small-town sheriff (Phoenix) and mayor (Pascal)바카라ť that 바카라śsparks a powder keg as neighbor is pitted against neighbor in Eddington, New Mexico.바카라ť

It explores themes like conspiracy theories, pandemic anxiety, political division and social unrest.

Eddington is a follow-up to Aster's 2023바카라™s Beau Is Afraid, which also starred Phoenix.
