Ashutosh Gowariker, born on February 15, 1964, is an Indian filmmaker, actor, screenwriter, and producer known for his grand and visually rich storytelling in Hindi cinema. He gained fame for directing films that blend history, culture, and emotion on an epic scale. His most notable works include the iconic sports drama Lagaan (2001), the socially conscious Swades (2004), and the historical love story Jodhaa Akbar (2008). He has won multiple Filmfare Awards for Best Director and Best Film for Lagaan and Jodhaa Akbar. Lagaan also earned an Academy Award nomination for Best International Feature Film, making Gowariker a voting member of the Academy.
Gowariker was born in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, into a Marathi-speaking family. His parents, Ashok and Kishori Gowariker, supported his creative pursuits. He is married to Sunita Gowariker, the daughter of actor Deb Mukherjee, and they have two sons, Konark and Vishwang. His career began as an actor in Ketan Mehta바카라s Holi (1984), where he first met Aamir Khan, with whom he later collaborated on Lagaan. He also acted in TV series like Kacchi Dhoop, Circus, and C.I.D., as well as films like Naam, Goonj, and Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa. After years behind the camera, he returned to acting in the critically acclaimed Marathi film Ventilator (2016).
Gowariker made his directorial debut with the thriller Pehla Nasha (1993), followed by Baazi (1995), both of which failed commercially. However, his breakthrough came in 2001 with Lagaan, a story about a group of Indian villagers challenging British rule through a cricket match. The film was a massive success, earning international acclaim and numerous awards. He followed this with Swades (2004), which explored an NRI바카라s journey of rediscovering India and its rural challenges. Though it did not perform well at the box office, it has since gained cult status.
In 2008, he directed Jodhaa Akbar, a historical romance featuring Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai, which became a major success. It won several awards and was recognized by the British Film Institute as one of the great Bollywood films of the 21st century. His next projects, What바카라s Your Raashee? (2009), Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey (2010), Mohenjo Daro (2016), and Panipat (2019), received mixed-to-negative reviews and struggled at the box office.
Despite recent setbacks, Gowariker remains a respected filmmaker known for his ambition and detailed storytelling. In 2024, he will serve as the chairperson of the international jury at the 55th International Film Festival of India.
