Her father, Major Bhupinder Singh, was an Indian Army officer, and after his tragic death in 1994, Nimrat's family moved to Noida, Delhi. She completed her schooling at Delhi Public School and pursued a B.Com. Hons. degree from Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi University.
