In a breakthrough that could redefine how breast cancer is diagnosed, a team of Indian researchers has developed an affordable electronic device capable of detecting cancerous cells with exceptional precision, thus doing away the need for complex, expensive lab infrastructure or chemical reagents.
The semiconductor-based device Tunnel Field Effect Transistor (TFET) is engineered through advanced Technology Computer-Aided Design (TCAD) simulations, as per the researchers from the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela in Odisha.
The details of the innovation by researchers Priyanka Karmakar and Prasanna Kumar Sahu, both from the Department of Electrical Engineering, NIT, Rourkela, are published in journal Microsystem Technologies. The findings from show that the sensor is sensitive in detecting T47D cancer cells due to their high density and permittivity. It is also highly effective at distinguishing the cancerous cells from healthy breast cells, offering improved sensitivity compared to existing technologies.
