Dozens of demonstrators on Tuesday attacked and set fires to parts of nine foreign embassies for allegedly backing the rebel group - M23.
Days after Rwandan-backed rebel group M23 claimed control of Goma, several protests have broken out across the Democratic Republic of Congo. As per the latest reports, protests have attacked several foreign embassies in the country, especially those countries which have been accused of backing the rebel group.
Dozens of demonstrators on Tuesday attacked and set fires to parts of nine foreign embassies. The embassies which were attacked were of Rwanda, France, Belgium, Kenya, the United States and Uganda.
Amid the fighting and protests, embassies of the countries accused of backing the Rwandan rebel forces were attacked in Kinshasa.
Speaking to Reuters, a European diplomat said that the embassies of France, the United States, Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya were targeted by the protesters.
The attack on the French embassy was also confirmed by the foreign minister Jean-Noel Barrot who stated that the blaze had been brought under control.
"All of this is because of Rwanda. What Rwanda is doing is in complicity with France, Belgium, the United States and others. The people of Congo are tired. How many times should we die?" a protester told news agency Reuters.
Amid the fighting and unrest in Congo, a lab holding the Ebola virus in the country is at risk. Flagging the concern, the Red Cross voiced its alarm saying that the state of fighting could result in the virus escaping.
"The International Committee of the Red Cross is very concerned about the situation in the laboratory of the national biomedical research institute, which is facing a risk of power cuts", said ICRC regional director for Africa, Patrick Youssef.
He added that the laboratory was "very close" to the ICRC delegation in Goma but the preservation of the samples may be affected by the ongoing clashes.
Since the start of the year, at least half a million people in Goma have been forced to flee their homes for safety. With the rebel group claiming control of the eastern Congolese city on Sunday, hundreds of thousands more have been forced to evacuate.
Amid this, the humanitarian crisis in the city continues to prevail with a lack of basic necessities such as food, water and medical aid.
