US Calls On China To Prevent Iran From Closing Strait Of Hormuz

United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio turned to China on Sunday to prevent Iran from closing the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important shipping routes in the world. His remarks came after Iranian state media reported that the parliament had approved the plan to close the strait but the final decision rested with the Supreme National Security Council.

바카라�I encourage the Chinese government in Beijing to call them about that, because they heavily depend on the Straits of Hormuz for their oil,바카라� Rubio said in an interview on Fox News. 

China is the world바카라�s largest buyer of Iranian oil and maintains a good relationship with Tehran. Approximately 20 percent of the global gas and oil flowed through the Strait of Hormuz in 2024.

Rubio asserted that "If they do that, it will be another terrible mistake. It's economic suicide for them if they do it. And we retain options to deal with that, but other countries should be looking at that as well. It would hurt other countries' economies a lot worse than ours."

Oil prices reached their highest in the last five months after the US carried out strikes on Iran바카라�s nuclear facilities. 

What is the Strait of Hormuz?

The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow but strategically vital waterway that connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and ultimately to the Arabian Sea. It sits between Iran to the north and Oman and the United Arab Emirates to the south. In its narrowest segment, the strait spans only about 21 nautical miles across, but despite its size, it plays an outsized role in the global economy. Every day, a significant portion of the world바카라�s oil supply passes through this route. The waterway is governed by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea under the principle of 바카라�transit passage,바카라� allowing ships of all nations to pass through it, even in territorial waters claimed by the coastal states.
