Ahead of the formation of the new government in Delhi, the Bharatiya Janata Party began the clean-up of the Yamuna River in the capital. On Sunday, trash skimmers, weed harvesters and dredge utility units were spotted in action near the banks of the river.
This development, which was one of the key promises made by the BJP during the polls, comes weeks after the party won big in the Delhi Assembly elections 2025.
BJP won a total of 48 seats of 70, ousting the Aam Aadmi Party after 10 years in the national capital.
As per Raj Niwas officials, the cleaning of the Yamuna River began with trash skimmers, weed harvesters and a dredger. Officials added that the cleaning of the river will take place through a "four-pronged strategy."
Based on a report by PTI, the strategy has been put in place to clean the river, which involves, removing trash and silt from the river stream and simultaneous cleaning operations in Najafgarh drain, supplementary drain and other major drains.
Officials further added that this strategy involves daily monitoring of capacity and output of the existing sewage treatment plants.
"Execution of this ambitious plan that targets cleaning the river in about three years, will require seamless coordination between various agencies and departments including Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Delhi Jal Board, I&FC, environment department, public works department and Delhi Development Authority," an official at the LG office was quoted as saying.
"Monitoring of these works will be done in a weekly basis at the highest level. Besides, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has been directed to keep strict vigil on discharge of untreated effluent into the drains by industrial units," he added.
