Speaking to Outlook, the eyewitnesses said there are four staff quarters, and the flight crashed into those while some people were inside the buildings. However, most were outside because of the lunch hour.

• Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani is among the 241 people who died in the Air India AI171 plane crash near Ahmedabad airport on Thursday afternoon. His office earlier today said Rupani was severely injured in the crash.

• Union Minister Amit Shah arrived at the crash site of the Air India plane crash. He was seen alongside Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel taking stock of the site.

• Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu said that a formal investigation has been initiated by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB).

According to news agency ANI, PM Modi to visit Ahmedabad on Friday in the wake of the Air India plane crash that took the lives of 241 people a day before.

Air India in its statement published in X platform said, " Air India confirms that flight AI171, operating from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick on 12 June 2025, was involved in an accident. The 12-year-old Boeing 787-8 aircraft departed from Ahmedabad at 1338 hrs, carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew. The aircraft crashed shortly after take-off. We regret to inform that, of the 242 aboard, there are 241 confirmed fatalities. The sole survivor is being treated in a hospital. The passengers comprised 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, 7 Portuguese nationals and 1 Canadian national. The survivor is a British national of Indian origin. Air India offers its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased. Our efforts now are focused entirely on the needs of all those affected, their families and loved ones. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday said he is "deeply shocked" to learn about the Air India flight that crashed minutes after taking off from the Ahmedabad airport.

"Deeply shocked to learn about the flight crash in Ahmedabad. Our prayers are with the passengers and their families," Jaishankar posted on X.

Defence Minster Rajnath Singh, in a post on X, said he was "deeply anguished" by the accident.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the passengers and the crew," he said.

Union Culture Minster Gajendra Singh Shekhawat also took to X to express shock over the crash. He also paid tribute to Rupani, saying his countless contributions will remain in memory.

 UN chief Antonio Guterres said he was 바카라�deeply saddened바카라� by the plane crash and offered 바카라�heartfelt condolences바카라� to the families and loved ones of all affected.

US President Donald Trump described the crash as "one of the worst in aviation history" and emphasised readiness of the US to help India in any capacity.

바카라�The plane crash was terrible. I've already told them (India), anything we can do. It's a big country, a strong country, and they'll handle it, I'm sure,바카라� Trump said in response to a question at the White House during an event.

Russian President Putin offered condolences to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the plane crash, the Kremlin said.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said she was "deeply saddened" by the tragic crash and offered condolences to the families of the victims.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed grief over the plane crash and extended condolences to the families of the victims.

Rukum Singh, a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel, who mans a barrack at the Ahmedabad airport spoke to Outlook regarding the tragic plane crash yesterday.

Describing the last few moments of the flight, Singh says: 바카라�The tail of the plane crashed into the first building. The remaining body of the plane crashed into the next three buildings, damaging all four. There were people inside. I don't know how many survived. Or died.바카라�

Speaking to reporters from Ahmedabad after visiting crash site on June 12, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said, 바카라�There was 1.25 lakh litres of fuel inside the plane and it caught fire so it was impossible to save anyone."

The entire nation is in deep shock following the tragedy, he said.

Shah also expressed condolences to relatives of those killed in the accident.

바카라�The number of those killed will be officially released by the authorities after DNA test and identification of the victims,바카라� Shah said.

"The good news is that one person survived the crash and I am coming here after meeting him,바카라� he said.

"The process of collecting DNA samples from bodies of those killed in the plane crash is over. Forensic Science Laboratory and National Forensic Sciences University in Gujarat will conduct DNA tests of the victims,바카라� he said.

In a statement, Mukesh D. Air India MD and CEO Campbell Wilson visited the crash site at BJ Medical College and Civil Hospital on the morning after the tragic accident of the flight AI-171 operated with a Boeing 787-8 aircraft to London-Gatwick.

Wilson issued a video statement on Thursday saying, "The first and most importantly, I would like to express our deep sorrow about this event. This is a difficult day for all of us here in India. And it's now focused entirely on the needs of our passengers, crew members, their families, and loved ones."

He said that while there would be many questions at this stage, he would not be able to answer all of them.

"But I do want to share the information we have at this time. Here, India flight AI-171 operated with a Boeing 787-8 aircraft to London-Gatwick has been involved in an accident after takeoff," Wilson said.

An elderly couple hailing from Maharashtra's Solapur district planned to meet their son in London and were on board the ill-fated plane that crashed in Ahmedabad shortly after its take-off, a senior official said.

Mahadev Pawar (68) and his wife Asha (60) hailed from Hatid village in Sangola tehsil of Solapur.

A senior official from Solapur district administration said the Pawars had been living in Ahmedabad.

"Mahadev Pawar used to work in a textile mill in Nadiad (in Gujarat). He had two sons 바카라� one living in Ahmedabad and the other in London. The couple was on board the plane that crashed minutes after take-off," the official said.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Thursday said that a UK investigation team has been dispatched as part of the ongoing investigation into the London-bound Air India Flight 171 crash in Ahmedabad.

DNA identification process of the family members who lost their loved ones in the plane crash is underway at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital. The police are taking special care of these families, reported PTI.

Air India has set up assistance centres in Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Delhi, and Gatwick (London) airports for the relatives and friends of the victims of the plane crash in Ahmedabad, the airline said on Friday.

These centres are facilitating travel of family members to Ahmedabad, Air India said in a statement.

The friends & relatives assistance centres have been set up at the four airports to provide support and take care of the needs of the families and loved ones of those aboard flight AI171, the airline said in the statement.

Besides, the airline has also set up a dedicated passenger hotline number -- 1800 5691 444 -- for those calling from within India and +918062779200 for those calling from outside India. 

The Boeing 787-8 aircraft was carrying a total of 242 passengers and crew members out of whom 241 have died, confirmed Air India. There were also some casualties at the crash site as the plane crashed into the BJP Medical College and Hospital in Meghaninagar area.

The total number of deaths in Ahmedabad plane crash is 256 as of now.

PM Modi met Vishwaskumar Ramesh, the lone survivor who was onboard the ill-fated Air India flight AI-171, at the Civil Hospital.

Vishwaskumar Ramesh was in '11A' seat of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner which was carrying 242 passengers and crew. He was travelling to London with his brother.

Bollywood star Salman Khan, who cancelled an event for the Indian Supercross Racing League in the wake of the tragedy, has also condoled the deaths.

"Deeply saddened to hear about the Ahmedabad plane crash... heartfelt prayers for the families of the passengers, crew and all those affected," he wrote on Instagram.

Actor-filmmaker Farhan Akhtar said he was heartbroken to learn about the airline incident.

"Deepest condolences to all who have lost a family member or a friend. Hope and pray that you find the strength to cope with this unimaginable loss. Thoughts are with you at this incredibly difficult time," he said.

Actor Vikrant Massey also mourned the loss of lives and said Kundar was the son of a family friend.

"My heart breaks for the families & loved ones of the ones who lost their lives in the unimaginably tragic air crash in Ahmedabad today.

"It pains even more to know that my uncle, Clifford Kunder lost his son, Clive Kunder who was the 1st officer operating on that fateful flight. May God give strength to you and your family uncle and to all deeply affected," he wrote on Instagram. 

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday expressed his gratitude to all foreign leaders and governments for offering their condolences at the loss of lives in the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad.

Family members of Kongbrailatpam Nganthoi Sharma, who was a cabin crew member on the ill-fated Air India aircraft AI-171 that crashed yesterday, spoke to the media.

K. Nandeshkumar Sharma, her father told PTI, 바카라�My daughter joined Air India in April 2023. After completing her training, she began flying. She came home twice to surprise us, as she hadn바카라�t yet received any official leave. The last time she visited was in March. And now, we have received the heartbreaking news of her passing. We haven바카라�t heard anything official from the airport authorities. No representative from the airline has contacted us directly. My daughter has passed away, but we deserve at least some information, something. They should think of the family and inform us about the condition of her body or share any details.바카라�

Ravindra Thakore mourns the loss of his mother and daughter, who were working at the canteen of the medical college hostel on which the ill-fated aircraft crashed.

He told PTI, 바카라�I want the authorities to check inside the building. I want to go by myself. I have checked in a private hospital but there is no information.. My mother and my two year old daughter were here and now there is no information바카라�바카라�

Forensic Science Professor Dr Naresh Kumar Soni says, "It was quite a horrifying accident, and due to the condition of the wreckage, identifying all the disaster victims is extremely difficult. All bodies have been moved to the postmortem room. The forensic science team is conducting DNA analysis, and once matches are confirmed, the remains will be handed over to the families. Samples are being collected based on available evidence. Since there's a risk of contamination over time due to temperature, the FSL team is working as quickly as possible."

A local who resides near the AI-171 crash site told ANI, "My house is 700m away from the crash site. We got to know that a massive fire had broken out...I reached the spot and I saw that the police, the fire department and a lot of local people, including workers of BJP, have also come there...It was a very horrible scene, as everywhere there were bodies, completely burnt bodies."

Keenal Mistri from Gujarat's Anand was among 241 passengers who lost their lives in yesterday's plane crash.

In Ahmedabad, her father-in-law says, "We gave the blood sample, and it will take 72 hours (for DNA verification). She was in India for the last month for dental treatment as she had been living in London for the last year; hence, she was returning yesterday."

Satish Lavania, brother of the deceased Neeraj Lavania, mourns the loss of his brother and sister-in-law, who died in the Ahmedabad plane crash.

He says, "I found out through a news channel. I was speaking to my brother while he was on his way to board the flight. I am also leaving for Ahmedabad. In the family, he has one daughter, and his mother-in-law used to live with them."

Medical student Shivdeep Singh Praveen Singh Jhala, one of the victims injured when the ill-fated plane AI-171 crashed into the hostel building of BJ Medical College and Hospital, spoke to the media from Civil Hospital.

When asked about his condition, he responded, "Yes, I am fine."

Before her flight to London, Air India crew member Maithili Patil had made a final, comforting promise to her father, Moreshwar Patil, that she would call him once she reached the city. But the call did not come.

Patil, 23, is among 12 crew members of ill-fated Air India's Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft (AI-171) that crashed immediately after taking off from Ahmedabad airport on Thursday afternoon.

A resident of Nhava village, Patil joined Air India two years ago and is the daughter of an ONGC labour contractor, former sarpanch of Nhava Jitendra Mhatre told PTI.

Mhatre, who is also Patil's relative, recalled that she had called her father minutes before the tragedy, assuring him that she would call once she reached London.

It is estimated that nine crew members, including the two pilots, were from Maharashtra.

Irfan Samir Shaikh, one of the cabin crew members of the London-bound Air India flight that crashed in Ahmedabad, had joined the aviation industry only two years ago and had big dreams, which are now shattered, his family member told PTI.

Twenty-two-year-old Shaikh's family resides in Pimpri Chinchwad area near Pune city.

Irfan's uncle Firoz Shaikh said his nephew always made it a point to inform his parents about his flight roster.

"On Thursday, when the news of the plane crash was flashed, his mother was devastated as she knew that he was on board that flight," he said.

Shaikh said that after the incident, Irfan's mother, father and elder brother immediately flew to Ahmedabad.

"The authorities have collected the blood samples of Irfan's brother for a DNA test, and the family is now awaiting confirmation and the return of his body," he said.

Akash Vatsa, who claimed in a viral tweet yesterday that he flew in the same Boeing 787 Dreamliner from Delhi to Ahmedabad, hours before it crashed soon after take off while flying as Air India flight AI171 from Ahmedabad to London, spoke exclusively to ANI.

He said, "... I did not witness any issues when the flight took off. I felt something was unusual with the plane's flaps outside. Experts will be able to decode this better... The ACs were not working properly when the flight was on the ground before taking off... At cruising altitude, I noticed that the rear part of the flaps was moving up and down repeatedly. However, many aviation experts have pointed out that it is normal for the ACs to be off to give the plane a better thrust. I tried to complain about it, but the crew was in a rush because the flight was almost ready for take off... Even after the AC was switched on, its temperature kept fluctuating... Even when we got on the shuttle bus after the flight, many other passengers exclaimed that the bus's AC was working better than the flight's."

The administration requested the relatives of the crash victims to come forward and give their DNA samples for the speedy identification of the charred bodies.

The process of taking samples is ongoing at the DNA Sample Test Centre inside the premises. The relatives of the victims were seen sitting inside the hall.

After collecting the samples, the doctors are taking them for examination. More than 215 samples have been sent since last night.

Recollecting the harrowing, near-death experience of the devastating aviation mishap on Thursday, Vishwaskumar Ramesh, the lone survivor of the Ahmedabad-London Air India flight AI-171 crash, said he 'doesn바카라�t know how' he managed to escape.

Grieving members of the families of the Air India flight crash victims arriving in Ahmedabad a day after the mishap that killed over 240 people and injured several others.

A day after the devastating aviation mishap, students were seen exiting with their luggage from BJ Medical College's doctors' hostel, where the London-bound Air India flight crashed yesterday.

Many students can be seen with injuries, fractures, and damaged belongings.

President of the Federation of Indian Pilots and aviation expert CS Randhawa says: "The aircraft must have had approximately 70,000 liters of fuel, since it was a nine-hour flight from Ahmedabad to London Heathrow. The first and foremost thing that comes to mind is the loss of both engines. It바카라�s very rare for both engines to fail. But Ahmedabad is known for a lot of bird activity. So, if there was a bird hit that affected both engines, then they could have flamed out or failed. That바카라�s one possibility.

"Another possibility is that the aircraft came from Delhi. When an aircraft flies at high altitudes, the wings become cold. There바카라�s fuel in the wings, and due to cold soak and condensation, water droplets can form. These droplets can become part of the fuel as contaminants. The aircraft was refueled for the next leg of its journey at Ahmedabad. Fuel testing is done by engineers to check for water contamination or any other impurities, and that must have been carried out. The aircraft was fully serviceable and cleared for flight. So, I would rule out sabotage or a technical failure".

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) told ANI that contrary to some reports, the video recorder being circulated is not the DFDR (Digital Flight Data Recorder). The black box was found on the rooftop.

AAIB began work with full force immediately. Over 40 staff from the State Government joined efforts to augment MoCA teams on site. The DFDR has been recovered from the rooftop:
