Covid-19 Update: Over 5,500 Active Cases Recorded In India; States Issue Advisories

As per official data, Kerala remains the worst-affected state, followed by Gujarat, Delhi and West Bengal. In view of the surge in COVID-19 cases, the affected states have started issuing advisories, while the Centre conducted mock drills to assess facility-level preparedness.

Amid the renewed COVID-19 scare, active cases in India crossed the 5,000 mark on Friday. According to the Union Health Ministry website, India currently has 5,755 active cases across states, while four new deaths have been reported in the past 24 hours.

As per , Kerala remains the worst-affected state, followed by Gujarat, Delhi and West Bengal. In view of the surge in COVID-19 cases, the affected states have started issuing advisories, while the Centre conducted mock drills to assess facility-level preparedness.

While a surge in cases is clearly visible, officials repeatedly asserted that most cases are mild and managed at home. The Centre has directed all states to ensure the availability of oxygen, isolation beds, ventilators, and essential medicines in light of the rising number of COVID-19 cases.

According to the scientists, while COVID-19 is losing its strength and becoming milder, occasional surges are likely to happen as the virus has now entered the endemic stage and is constantly evolving. However, there is nothing alarming about the situation.

On June 5, hospitals across the country conducted a mock drill to assess their preparedness for handling COVID-19 cases. On June 2 and 3, a series of technical review meetings chaired by Dr. Sunita Sharma, DGHS, were held with key health and disaster management agencies and state representatives to assess the current COVID-19 situation and review preparedness measures.

States Recorded Significant Number Of Cases In 24 Hours

Maharashtra

As many as 114 new COVID-19 cases were reported in Maharashtra on Friday, taking the count to 1,276 since January this year, while one more patient succumbed to the infection, pushing up the toll to 18, the state health department said on Friday.

Of these cases, 44 were detected in Pune (42 in civic limits in two in rural areas), 37 in Mumbai and seven each in Mira Bhayandar and Panvel Municipal Corporation areas. They were followed by civic areas of Navi Mumbai (4), Pimpri-Chinchwad (6), Kalyan (3), Thane, Satara, Kolhapur, Sangli, Chatrapati Sambhajinagar and Parbhani (one case each), a health department statement said.

Delhi

Delhi recorded 73 new COVID-19 infections, taking the count of active cases to 665, according to Union Health Ministry data released on Saturday.

The number of fatalities since January 1 stands at seven, with no fresh deaths recorded since Thursday.

Haryana

On Saturday, Haryana recorded 31 new cases, with 20 from Gurugram and Faridabad districts, PTI reported, quoting officials.

While Gurugram reported nine cases, Faridabad recorded 11 cases. Other districts included Karnal and Jhajjar with three cases each, Panipat with two cases, and Yamunanagar, Hisar, and Panchkula with one case each.

The state reported 87 active cases on Friday, with a total of 151 cumulative positive cases. Only two patients are currently admitted to health facilities.

Haryana Health Minister Arti Singh Rao urged people and healthcare officials to remain vigilant and proactive. She emphasised that the health and safety of every citizen is the government's top priority.

"Timely action and strict adherence to preventive measures can significantly curb the spread of the virus", she said while assuring that there is no need to panic. 

West Bengal

In West Bengal, 58 new COVID-19 cases were detected in the last 24 hours, the ministry said on Friday. During the same period, 91 patients recovered, bringing the total number of active cases to 596. The death toll remained unchanged at one.
