India-Pakistan Tensions: Drones were sighted near Jammu and Kahsmir's Samba district on Monday night, soon after PM Modi addressed the nation to speak about 'Operation Sindoor'. The Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan held talks on Monday. This happened hours after Air Marshal AK Bharti, Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai and Vice Admiral AN Pramod held a press briefing where they assured that the Indian military bases remain operational for future operations as and when required.

Operation Sindoor: The Indian government informed that on the intervening night of May 6 and 7, the Indian military launched 'Operation Sindoor' where they carried out a "measured, non-escalatory, proportionate, and responsible" strike to dismantle terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan to "deter and to pre-empt" any further terrorist strikes to retaliate the Pahalgam attack. The four days following Operation Sindoor saw intense cross-border drone and missile strikes targeted at several border cities in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan and Gujarat. New Delhi and Islamabad reached an understanding on May 10 to halt military actions with immediate effect.

"They (border residents) should now try to return to their homes. Eighty to 90 per cent of Poonch town is vacant. They had left their homes when shelling was taking place. Now that the shelling has stopped, they can return to their homes," Abdullah told reporters.

The National Conference (NC) leader said this is the first time that shells have fallen right in the middle of towns and heavy bombardment has taken place. "We have lost 13 precious lives. My purpose for coming here today is, at the very least, to reach those homes where this tragedy occurred," he said.

Abdullah met with members of the local civil society and commended the people of Poonch for maintaining communal harmony in the face of adversity. "Despite the difficult circumstances, they upheld the legacy of unity among Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs," he said.

Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha and Minister Satish Sharma on Monday joined the wreath-laying ceremony of BSF Constable Deepak Chingakham who died in cross-border firing by Pakistani troops.

BSF Inspector General (Jammu Frontier) Shashank Anand and other senior BSF officials, police and civil officers also attended the ceremony to pay floral tributes to the slain constable.

Constable Deepak Chingakham suffered fatal injuries during cross-border firing along the international border in the R S Pura area of Jammu district on May 10 and attained martyrdom on May 11.

A solemn wreath-laying ceremony was held at BSF headquarters in Jammu, and later his mortal remains were dispatched to his family for the last rites.

The LG laid a wreath at the mortal remains and said "I salute the brave son of Mother India, BSF Constable Deepak Chingakham, who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty." He further said, "We share the grief of the family and stand in solidarity." After the wreath-laying ceremony, the tricolour-wrapped coffin carrying the body of the constable was dispatched to his hometown for the last rites.

India-Pakistan LIVE: Pakistan Claims 7 dead, 6 injured In Indian Drone Attacks

Pakistani authorities on Monday claimed that seven people were killed and six others sustained serious injuries on Saturday in Indian drone attacks and firing in Gujrat city of Punjab province.

A government official said the areas hit by drones on Saturday were Lahore, Chiniot, Pakpattan, Kharian, Sheikhupura and Jalapur Jattan of Punjab province.

"Seven people were killed and six seriously wounded because of Indian firing and drone attack in the villages bordering India on Saturday last," the official added.

The official also said "significant damage" was done to the Sheikh Zayed International Airport (airbases) in Rahim Yar Khan district of Punjab, some 400kms from Lahore, after a missile fired by India hit it in the early hours of Saturday.

"The Indian strike has caused significant damage to its infrastructure, including the Royal Lounge used by the UAE president and his family," he said.  Rahim Yar Khan Deputy Commissioner Khuram Javed claimed India targeted the airport with both a missile and a drone.

"The attack destroyed the Royal Lounge, and a 10-foot-wide crater was left at the apron area of the airport," Javed said.

The two military officials deliberated on various aspects of the understanding reached between the two sides on May 10 on stopping military actions and firings, it is learnt.

The talks over the hotline were previously scheduled at 12 noon. However, it started at around 5 PM. The outcome of the talks is not yet known.

All schools and colleges in the non-border districts of Jammu and Kashmir will reopen on Tuesday after remaining closed for nearly a week.

"All schools and colleges to reopen from tomorrow in non-border districts of Jammu as well as Kashmir," Education Minister Sakina Ittoo said in a post on X.

The schools, colleges and universities in the Union Territory were temporarily shut last week in view of the military standoff between India and Pakistan.

The University of Kashmir has postponed all examinations till May 14.

 After teetering on the edge for nearly a week, border regions in the north experienced a less fraught day, with no shelling, no sightings of drones, and a comparatively lighter yoke of emergency measures.

Villagers living close to the Line of Control who were forced to flee due to heavy shelling by the Pakistani military started returning home on Monday.

They started their journey back to their villages after bomb disposal squads cleared the residential areas of any leftover or unexploded shells, officials said.

Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday asked the residents of border villages not to rush back as residential areas were yet to be sanitised and cleared of any unexplored shells.

In Punjab, markets teemed with people in the border areas on Monday, even though schools in some districts remained shut.

Schools in Ferozepur, Fazilka, Pathankot, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, and Gurdaspur districts, that lie on the border with Pakistan, remained shut on Monday. In Pathankot and Gurdaspur, colleges and universities also remained closed.
