In less than 24 hours since JEE aspirant's suicidal death in Rajasthan's Kota, another student, who also was preparing for the same exam, allegedly died by suicide in his PG room at Dakaniya area under the Vigyan Nagar Police Station, officials said on Wednesday.
According to PTI, the deceased was later identified as 20-year-old Abhishek, a resident of Guna in Madhya Pradesh, who had been preparing for the JEE at a coaching institute in Kota since May last year.
On Tuesday evening, a similar case was reported when a 19-year-old student from Haryana, identified as Neeraj, also died by suicide.
Vigyan Nagar Police Station SHO Mukesh Meena confirmed the latest incident while adding that they received information in this regard around 7.45 pm on Wednesday following which the police personnel rushed to the spot. The reason behind the him taking the extreme step is yet to ascertained as no suicide note was recovered from the PG room.
According to the officials associated with the investigation, the youth's body has been placed in the hospital mortuary for post-mortem to be conducted after the arrival of his family members.
As per a report by NDTV, following the tragic loss, Abhishek's family said that he was good in studies and had insisted on coming to Kota for coaching. His uncle, who came to Kota to collect his body, said they spoke to him every day but he never expressed any stress about studies.
"He always said everything was good and going well. 'I am busy with preparations' is what he told us. The last time we spoke to him was the evening before the incident," said his uncle, as per the NDTV report.
Rajasthan's Kota is known as the coaching hub of the country which prepares students from different states for the highly competitive examinations like JEE and NEET.
Since past few years, the city has witnessed a significant surge in student suicide cases which now appears to be a serious challenge for the counsellors as well as district administration.
Several coaching centers in Kota installed anti-suicide fans across hostels and paying guest (PG) accommodations to reduce suicide cases among students. Reports suggest that in 2024, the number of suicides in Kota had come down by 38 percent to 17 as compared to 24 in 2023.
In light of the unprecended surge in the cases of student suicide reported in Rajasthan's educational hub Kota in 2023, the Supreme Court stated that the onus is on the parents and not the institutions for putting urealistic pressure on their wards. The decision came as the apex court was hearing a plea seeking regulation of private coaching institutes.'
According to the division bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and SVN Bhatti, "Coaching institutes in Kota cannot be blamed. It is parents putting undue pressure on their children in a highly competitive environment which is leading to students ending their lives,"
The court observed that "suicides are not happening because of the coaching institutes. They happen because the children cannot meet the expectations of their parents."
"Exams have become very competitive, and there are a lot of expectations from parents. Students are losing out by half a mark or one mark in such exams and are not able to cope with the pressure," the court said.
