Singapore-Flagged Vessel Catches Fire Off Kerala Coast; Navy And Coast Guard Launch Rescue Operation

The Indian Coast Guard deployed multiple assets, including a CG Dornier aircraft, for rescue and damage assessment.

A Singapore-flagged container ship, MV Wan Hai 503, caught fire approximately 144 kilometers (78 nautical miles) off the coast of Beypore in Kerala's Kozhikode district, prompting a large-scale rescue and relief operation by the Indian Navy and Coast Guard, a Defence Ministry spokesperson confirmed on Monday on X.

The fire reportedly broke out following multiple explosions on board, according to a Reuters report, causing around 40 containers to fall into the Arabian Sea. In a desperate attempt to escape the flames, several crew members jumped overboard.

바카라There were 22 crew members on board. Eighteen of them jumped into the sea and are currently in rescue boats. Efforts are ongoing to locate and rescue the remaining crew,바카라 said Shekhar Kuriakose, Secretary of the Kerala Disaster Management Authority. He added that the vessel, while ablaze, is not sinking at this time.

In response to the emergency, the Navy redirected its warship INS Surat and initiated an air sortie from INS Garuda. The Indian Coast Guard deployed multiple assets, including a CG Dornier aircraft, for rescue and damage assessment.
