The air quality panel for Delhi-NCR enforced Stage 4 of the Graded Response Action Plan with strict curbs across the national capital after the Air Quality Index in Delhi was recorded in 'severe' category at 10 pm on Monday hours after GRAP III was imposed.
Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court of India raised its concerns regarding air pollution. Calling pollution a "pan-India problem", the Central government has been asked to share a list of the most polluted cities across the country.
The air quality index in the regions of Delhi-NCR was 379 at 4 pm but breached the 400 mark around 10 pm amid extremely calm winds and "buildup of an inversion layer adversely affecting the vertical mixing height", reported PTI.
This led to the authorities to invoke GRAP-4 curbs in Delhi-NCR.
Under the GRAP-4 measurements, classes for students from VI-IX, XI in capital, Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad & Noida to run in hybrid mode.
The curbs also include a ban on all construction and demolition activities, including public projects such as highways and flyovers, and on the entry of trucks carrying non-essential goods into Delhi.
Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has enforced GRAP III Across the national capital region as AQI levels once again worsen.
As per the order issued, schools and colleges in Delhi, Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad and Gautam Budh Nagar to shift to online classes classes for students up to Class V.
While hearing the case regarding non compliance with Solid Waste Management Rules 2016 in Delhi, a bench comprising of Justices Abhay Oka and Manmohan have called on the central government to share a list of the most polluted cities across the country.
"Give a list of other major cities with the problem of air pollution and weather for those cities some machinery can be created. We will expand this issue pan India. We should not give a wrong signal that sitting in Supreme Court we are only dealing with air pollution in Delhi," the top court said.
The Supreme Court's decision comes after it highlighted the failure of the Delhi government to implement GRAP measures and curb pollution in November.
During the air pollution crisis, the top court ordered forbade the NCT government of Delhi to remove GRAP until the apex court approved the matter.
