The monsoon has brought heavy rainfall across India, with the weather department issuing its highest warnings for the west coast. While some regions are getting relief from the heat, others are facing floods and disruptions. India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert across the southwestern coast , with Kerala and Karnataka bearing the brunt.

West India: Maharashtra, Goa & Karnataka

This region is currently facing the most severe weather, with a Red Alert in place for coastal Maharashtra, Goa, and Karnataka, warning of extremely heavy rain. In Karnataka, the heavy downpours have caused major problems, leading to the tragic death of a 100-year-old woman in Shivamogga district after a house wall collapsed.

In response to the Red Alert, authorities have declared a holiday for schools in the Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts, while an Orange Alert remains active in nine other districts. Both Goa and Maharashtra are similarly braced for very heavy rainfall.

South India: Kerala & Tamil Nadu

While the Red Alert has been lifted for the southern states, an Orange Alert remains in place as heavy rains continue. Kerala, in particular, is being battered by the relentless downpour. The state has reported two tragic fatalities in its central districts, where one person was found after falling into a swollen stream and another died when a tree fell on him.

As a safety measure, schools in nine districts have been given a holiday on Monday. Meanwhile, neighboring Tamil Nadu is expected to receive lighter rain accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds.

Northeast India

The entire northeastern region is under an Orange Alert, with forecasts predicting rain for the next seven days. Assam and Meghalaya are expected to receive very heavy rainfall over the coming days, and the city of Guwahati is also preparing for significant showers.

Other states in the region, including Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, will continue to experience moderate rain with thunderstorms and gusty winds.

Central & East India

As the monsoon advances, an Orange Alert has also been issued for several central and eastern states. Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Bihar, and parts of Madhya Pradesh are all expecting to see heavy showers as the weather system moves over these areas.

North India

While the full force of the monsoon has yet to arrive in the north, some areas have received welcome rain. The national capital, Delhi, got a break from scorching heat after early morning showers, though the temperature remained high.

In Uttar Pradesh, the city of Ayodhya also saw light rain and gusty winds, bringing much-needed relief. Monsoon rains are expected to begin in Uttar Pradesh around June 18 and continue in Rajasthan, while wet weather is likely to reach Haryana and Himachal Pradesh by June 20-21.
