Mirabai Chanu Fires A Medal-Starved Nation바카라™s Dreams

Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu was perhaps the most-searched name on Google in India after news trickled in from Day One of competition at the Tokyo Olympics: that she won the silver in the ­women바카라™s 49-kg category. The 26-year-old lifted 202 kg바카라”87 kg in snatch and 115 kg in clean and jerk바카라”to better Karnam Malleswari바카라™s bronze in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Standing below five feet, this pocket dynamo instantly turned into the nation바카라™s poster girl바카라”there was nobody, not even Parliament, who didn바카라™t congratulate her. A nation starved of heroes other than those in cricket showered compliments and cash. Her employers, the railways, announced a Rs 2 crore reward and a promotion, while home-state Manipur gave her a cheque of Rs 1 crore and offered a police officer바카라™s job. More rewards, awards, felicitations, endorsements will follow.

The spotlight on Mirabai illuminated another less-told story: that of Manipur and its sports-mad people. This is the land where Sagol Kangjei, or polo, originated. This land also gave us Khong kangjei, similar to field hockey. With such a rich legacy, sports run in the DNA. A chilling reminder of the weight given to sports was the 1996 murder of a contractor and an engineer. Militants killed them after a hockey stadium collapsed during construction in Imphal, host of the 1999 National Games. The reason could be anything, but people didn바카라™t flinch as the killings were passed off as punishment against corruption in a matter that touched Manipuri hearts and prestige: sports. Mirabai has inherited Manipuri athletic genes바카라”and she is following in the footsteps of boxer M.C. Mary Kom, the state바카라™s first Olympic medalist in 2016, and weightlifters N. Kunjarani Devi and L. Anita Chanu.

Her poor parents supported her pursuit of glory. Before her Olympic debut in Rio 2016, her mom gifted her a pair of earrings in the shape of the Games rings, selling her gold jewellery to give her daughter a lucky talisman. Luck betrayed a nervous Chanu in Rio, but that misfortune fired her up. She bec­ame a world champion the following year and took the 2018 Commonwealth Games gold medal. But she had to sit out the Asian Games that year because of lower-back injury, which flared up again after the long pandemic lockdown when she missed training. Therapy in the US put her back on the track for Tokyo. And that silver is now worth more than its weight in gold.

The dazzle of her silver may blind us about a bitter truth. India has won only 29 medals thus far in its Olympic history. Mirabai바카라™s story will inspire many, but is unlikely to change the biggest reason why India fails: the lack of sporting ­culture. Sports stars emerge in India by accident, not by design. And the regions where sport is part of life do not exist in the national consciousness.
