The ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 final begins Wednesday, June 11 with defending champions Australia taking on South Africa for the coveted mace.

Previously, two World Test Championships have been held with two different winners getting crowned. The tournament works on two year cycles where teams play three home and three away Test series and the top two then qualify for the final.

Below is a recap of the previous two World Test Championship finals that took place in 2021 and 2023.

WTC 2019-21 Final

India and New Zealand qualified for the inaugural WTC final in 2021 which was played in Southampton.

India were asked to bat first by New Zealand on a tricky pitch and the Virat Kohli-led side were bowled out for just 217 with tall Kiwi pacer Kyle Jamieson taking five wickets. India managed to stop New Zealand to 249 and conceded a 32-run first innings lead.

Kiwi pace quartet of Tim Southee, Kyle Jamieson, Trent Boult and Niel Wagner wreaked havoc and bowled out India for only 170. The 139-run target was then easily chased down by the Kiwis and they became the first ever WTC champions.

WTC 2021-23 Final

India were up against Australia in the final of the second WTC held at The Oval. Rohit Sharma won the toss and put Australia to bat first and after some early success with the ball, India ran into Travis Head and Steve Smith.

Head slammed 163 off just 174 balls while Smith too scored a masterful 121 to take Australia to 469 in the first innings. India suffered a top-order collapse and then despite some valiant effort from the lower order, could only get to 296.

With a massive lead, Australia declared their second innings on 270/8 and India were given an uphill task to chase down 444. None of the gun Indian batters could score big and India were bundled out for 234 to lose their second successive WTC final.
