The Pataudi Trophy has been renamed the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, honouring two legends--James Anderson and Sachin Tendulkar. They will unveil it at Lord바카라s during the WTC final on June 11. However, the decision by ECB and BCCI has drawn widespread criticism as it sidelines the rich legacy of the Pataudi name in India-England Tests.

In 2007, the Pataudi Trophy was introduced to honor 75 years since India played its first Test match in England. The trophy is awarded to the winner of the India Vs England red-ball series during India바카라s tour of England.

What's In The Name?

The trophy is named after Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi and his son, Mansur Ali Khan, famously known as "Tiger" Pataudi. Both were legendary Indian cricketers who left a lasting legacy. Iftikhar uniquely played Test cricket for both England and India, while Tiger Pataudi is known to transform Indian cricket with his leadership skills from 1962 to 1975.

Similarly, when England win the Test series in India, it is played for the Anthony de Mello Trophy. Named after Anthony de Mello, the former Indian cricket administrator and one of the founders of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the trophy was first introduced in 1951 during England바카라s five-match tour of India.

Now, the ECB and BCCI have jointly announced that the series will be renamed the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy. As reported by ESPNcricinfo, the new trophy will be unveiled at Lord바카라s on June 11, just before the World Test Championship final and ahead of the five-Test series between India and England starting June 20.

The change honours two modern-day greats--Sachin Tendulkar, the world바카라s most-capped Test cricketer with 200 matches and 15,921 runs, and James Anderson, England바카라s leading wicket-taker with 188 Tests and 704 wickets to his name.

Critics Slam Renaming of Pataudi Trophy

However, the decision has sparked widespread criticism across the cricketing community. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar strongly opposed the move in his Sportstar column. He said, 바카라It shows a total lack of sensitivity to the contribution made by the Pataudis to cricket in both England and India.

Here바카라s hoping that if an Indian player has been approached, he바카라ll have the good sense to politely decline -- not only out of respect for two former India captains but also to avoid the same fate of having a trophy named after him retired after he is gone," he added.

Indian cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle also voiced his discomfort with the renaming of the trophy, saying it lacked the historical resonance of the original. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote:

바카라Having been an admirer of Anderson the player and, as is well known, of Tendulkar, both as a player and a person, I should have been happy with the series being played for a Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy. But it misses the deep connect that Pataudi had with our countries. Both father and son played for Sussex, Sr played for both England and India, Jr set schoolboy batting records in England. There was a very nice ring to the Pataudi Trophy.바카라

Iftikhar is the only cricketer to have played Test cricket for both England and India. The Indian debuted for England during the 1932바카라33 Ashes tour and later represented India in 1946. This earned him a respected figure in both the cricketing nations.

Meanwhile, Mansoor played 46 Tests for India between 1961 and 1975, captaining in 40 of them after becoming the youngest Indian skipper at 21. He is remembered as a unifying force who brought identity to Indian cricket during the time of its evolution.
