Shubman Gill played a gritty knock of 87 runs off 96 balls, whereas Shreyas Iyer (59 off 36) and Axar Patel (52 off 47) also hit half-centuries while chasing a modest target of 249 runs in Nagpur.

Earlier, the English captain, Jos Buttler, decided to bat first at the toss and India handed ODI debut caps to Harshit Rana and Yashasvi Jaiswal after Rohit Sharma revealed that Indian ace batter Virat Kohli is rested due to soreness in his knee.
Mohammed Shami, who was playing his first ODI after the ODI World Cup 2023 final, started with a maiden over. Rana conceded 11 runs in his first over but bowled the next over a maiden. Then Phil Salt targeted him and hit 26 runs in his over, including three sixes and two fours.
But, he made his comeback soon and picked up the wickets of Ben Duckett and Harry Brook in the same over to claim his first wickets in his ODI career. Then he went on to dismiss Liam Livingstone and became the first Indian bowler to take at least three wickets in the first innings of all formats in his career.
Jadeja also picked three wickets and dismantled the English middle-order with his spin bowling. England could only post 248 runs on the board.
In response, Rohit Sharma and Jaiswal came to open the innings but lost their wickets early. Iyer and Gill added 104 runs for the third wicket to rebuild the innings. Patel was promoted up in the batting order and he responded with a stunning half-century.
India have taken a lead in the series and will face the visitors in the next match which will be played on Sunday, 9 February at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack, Odisha.
