Jos Buttler has described Shubman Gill as a mix between Indian greats Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma ahead of England's upcoming Test series against India.Â
Gill was named as India's new Test captain after former skipper Rohit retired from the longest format, but will continue to play in the one-day internationals.Â
Rohit played in 67 Tests and had been India's captain since 2022, winning half of his 24 matches to give him the best winning percentage as skipper behind Kohli.Â
He retired having made 4,301 Test runs at an average of 40.57 with 12 centuries. His top score was 212 against South Africa in Ranchi in 2019, scored off just 255 balls.
Kohli is India's fourth all-time run scorer in Tests, with his 9,230 runs only bettered by Sunil Gavaskar (10,122), Rahul Dravid (13,265) and Sachin Tendulkar (15,921).Â
Gill was previously captain of the white-ball sides as well as the leader of his Indian Premier League team, the Gujarat Titans.
Buttler played under Gill for Gujarat in the IPL and was full of praise for the batter.
"He's a really impressive player and an impressive young man," Buttler said on his 'For the Love of Cricket' podcast.
"I feel like, on the field he's got a bit of fight about him - a bit of intensity, quite passionate. I think he'll be a mix of [Virat] Kohli and Rohit [Sharma].
"Kohli [was] that sort of real aggressive [character], really transformed the Indian team, in your face, up for the contest. Rohit a bit on the other side, a bit more laid back, very cool, calm, collected customer, but with that sort of fight.
"I feel like, from my time knowing Shubman so far, he'll be a bit in the middle. He's obviously learned from those two guys ... but he'll be very much his own man.
"Kohli is the king, Shubman is the prince - that's the narrative that they spin out there, and I feel that he's the coming man.
"Stepping into that number four, it's big shoes, isn't it? Coming behind Virat, and Sachin Tendulkar before that as well. That's obviously a huge role."
England바카라™s five-match Test series against India begins on June 20 at Headingley.
