Batting first, Sri Lanka put up a strong total of 274/6, with Mahela Jayawardene anchoring the innings with a masterful unbeaten 103 off 88 balls, laced with 13 boundaries.
A late surge from Thisara Perera, who smashed 22 off just 9 deliveries, gave their total an extra boost. For India, Zaheer Khan and Yuvraj Singh were the pick of the bowlers, claiming two wickets each.
India faced early blows in their chase as Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag fell cheaply. However, Gautam Gambhir anchored the innings with a vital 97 before Thisara Perera bowled him out. Dhoni then took charge, staying unbeaten on 91 off 79 balls and steering India to victory with 10 balls to spare.
