South Africa Tour Of Zimbabwe 2025: Proteas Move Without Captain Temba Bavuma Due To Hamstring Injury

This is Temba Bavuma's third hamstring injury in the past two years, first picking up the problem at the 2023 ODI World Cup

Temba Bavuma has been ruled out of South Africa's two-Test series against Zimbabwe.

The Proteas' captain suffered a hamstring injury during their World Test Championship triumph over Australia last week and played through the pain against medical advice.

He finished with a score of 66 in their second innings and put on a match-winning partnership with centurion Aiden Markram to help South Africa win their first senior men's ICC title since 1998.

This is Bavuma's third hamstring injury in the past two years, first picking up the problem at the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Due to Bavuma's absence, Keshav Maharaj will lead South Africa in the Test matches.

Markram and Kagiso Rabada, arguably South Africa's two best players against Australia at Lord's, will both be rested for the series, while Lungi Ngidi will only play the second Test.

The Proteas squad features five uncapped players as the first Test begins on June 28.

South Africa squad for Zimbabwe Tests: David Bedingham, Matthew Breetzke, Dewald Brevis, Corbin Bosch, Tony de Zorzi, Zubayr Hamza, Keshav Maharaj, Kwena Maphaka, Wiaan Mulder, Lungi Ngidi, Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Lesego Senokwane, Prenelan Subrayen, Kyle Verreynne, Codi Yusuf.
