Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma needed multiple staples to close the wounds after he was caught in the face by the boot of Monaco defender Wilfried Singo during their French Ligue 1 match at Stade Louis II early Thursday (December 19, 2024) morning India time. The incident happened in the 17th minute of the final Ligue 1 game of 2024 when Singo, whose initial shot had been blocked, tried to evade the sliding Donnarumma but instead planted his boot on the Italy international's face.
Pictures showed that Donnarumma was cut below his right eye and needed on-pitch treatment. The 25-year-old finally stood up and was replaced by Matvei Safonov in the 22nd minute with the score at 0-0. Ivorian Singo, who had already been warned, didn't get a red card.
Desire Doue put PSG ahead in the 24th minute only to see Monaco take a 2-1 lead at the hour mark thanks to Eliesse ben Seghir's penalty (53') and Breel Embolo's strike (60'). The holders eventually registered their 12th win in 16 outings this season with Ousmane Dembele scoring twice (64', 90+7'), either side of Goncalo Ramos' 83rd-minute header.
The win helped Luis Enrique's PSG consolidate their position at the top of the Ligue 1 2024-25 table, leading second-place Marseille by 10 points. But the Donnarumma injury left the travelling PSG with a lot to ponder.
"The refereeing decisions? I can't do anything, I couldn't see the action, but when you see an action like that it's always difficult," PSG boss Luis Enrique said after the match. "The players don't intend to hurt. It's difficult to referee this kind of match, I'm not talking about the refereeing work."
The club said that the goalkeeper will have "medical examinations" on Thursday and will have to "rest for several days".
Monaco are third, level on points with second-place Marseille, who have one match in hand.
Top-flight football in France will return on January 4 next year after the festive break.
