Dr. Thomas Chandy, a pioneer of world-class Orthopedics in Bengaluru, a globally renowned medical professional and a philanthropist, left for his heavenly abode.
Some are born to lead and make a difference around them. Such was the gifted doctor of Bengaluru, who healed countless patients and touched the souls of many through his music and compassion. Leaving behind a legacy of innovation and passion, at the age of 75, Dr. Thomas Chandy breathed his last on April 8, 2025, at 11.20 pm, after receiving a lung transplant at Manipal Hospital on HAL Road.
Dr. Thomas Chandy will always be remembered for his exceptional skills and expertise in the field of medical science. With over three decades of experience in India and abroad, he was a pioneer in sports medicine in India, treated top sportsmen and made world-class orthopedic care available in Bengaluru.
Born in Bengaluru, Dr. Chandy was the son of Kora Chandy, advocate and legal advisor to the British Residency. After his MBBS at St John바카라™s Medical College in 1973, Dr. Chandy went on to pursue Orthopedics at St. John바카라™s and St. Martha바카라™s Hospital and moved to the United States in 1980 for his higher studies in Orthopedic surgery at the Jewish Hospital and Medical Centre, Brooklyn, New York.
Upon his return to India, Dr. Chandy played an important role in the establishment of HOSMAT Hospital in Bengaluru in the 1990s. He was instrumental in obtaining land for the hospital in 1987, and its construction was completed in 1992. HOSMAT (Hospital for Orthopedics, Sports Medicine, Arthritis, and Accident Trauma Hospital) is a leading medical institution known for providing advanced Orthopedic care and treatment.
HOSMAT Hospital, under Dr. Chandy's leadership, offers comprehensive care, state-of-the-art facilities, sports medicine, accident and trauma care, and a holistic approach to patient care, combining surgery with rehabilitation, physical therapy, and psychological support.
Dr. Chandy was a strong advocate for continuing medical education and implemented the system for HOSMAT바카라™s medical staff to be constantly updated with the latest treatments and techniques. He was invited to several international conferences and as a speaker and faculty member in various workshops and seminars. He received multiple awards throughout his career for his contribution to the field of orthopaedics, including recognition from medical societies and patient care organisations.
An avid musician, he had a keen interest in farming. He was a passionate collector of musical instruments, with a personal collection of over 350 instruments from around the world. As the leader of the 바카라˜Jazz and Rock Revival,바카라™ a band established 2 decades ago, Dr. Chandy entertained audiences at cultural events. He also served as the president of the Bangalore Orthopedic Society and Bangalore Club. A talented jazz musician, he incorporated jazz during Orthopedic procedures to comfort both himself and his patients.
A compassionate soul, Dr. Chandy was involved in various philanthropic efforts, including providing free medical treatment for underprivileged patients. His focus was on ensuring accessibility to 바카라˜healthcare for all바카라™.
