The news of James Foley's death has been confirmed by his family to Deadline through a rep.
Born on December 28, 1953, in Brooklyn, Foley's directorial debut was with 1984 Reckless, the romantic drama starring Aidan Quinn and Daryl Hannah. It was followed by 1986 At Close Range, which was a crime thriller headlined by Sean Penn and Christopher Walken. It premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and was nominated for the Golden Bear prize.
Foley was also famous for directing music videos. In 1986, he directed videos for pop icon and Penn바카라™s then-wife, Madonna, for the chartbusters Papa Don바카라™t Preach, Live To Tell and True Blue.
In 1992, he directed the feature adaptation of David Mamet바카라™s play Glengarry Glen Ross.
His other features include After Dark, My Sweet (1990), Two Bits (1995), Fear, The Chamber (both 1996), Confidence (2003), Perfect Stranger (2007) and Red Zone (2014), among others.
Foley gained commercial success with Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan starrer Fifty Shades Darker (2017) and Fifty Shades Freed (2018), the sequels to the blockbuster Fifty Shades of Grey (2015).
He also directed shows for television including Billions, Twin Peaks, Hannibal, Wayward Pines and 12 episodes of Netflix hit thriller series House Of Cards.
James Foley is survived by his brother Kevin Foley, sister-in-law Mary Anne Myers, sisters Eileen and Jo Ann Foley, and his nephew Quinn Foley.
