Why June 21? The Origins of International Yoga Day

In 2014, Prime Minister Modi addressed the UNGA and proposed a global designated day to celebrate the Indian practice of yoga and its health benefits

June 21 is International Day of Yoga, a day designated to celebrating the health benefits of the Indian practice after Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed it to the United Nations General Assembly on September 27, 2014. The UN adopted India바카라™s proposal later the same year, with 177 co-sponsors. 

Why Is June 21 International Yoga Day?

The date바카라”June 21바카라” was picked by the UN as it coincides with the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere of Earth, which symbolises harmony and balance, considered the foundations of the ancient Indian practice. 

In 2015, the world celebrated its first International Day of Yoga with Prime Minister Modi and 36,000 gathering in New Delhi바카라™s Rajpath to perform 21 asanas.

 바카라śYoga for One Earth, One Health바카라ť Is The 2025 Yoga Day Theme

In 2025, the world will celebrate its 11th International Yoga Day. This year바카라™s theme is a call for unity바카라” 바카라śYoga for One Earth, One Health.바카라ť It also draws from the G20바카라™s 바카라śOne Earth, One Family, One Future바카라ť motto. 

Addressing the 11th International Yoga day participants in Delhi, Modi said the day marks the beginning of the ancient practice for humanity where inner peace becomes global policy.

"Unfortunately, today the whole world is going through some kind of tension. In many regions, unrest and instability are increasing. In such a situation, Yoga gives us the direction of peace. Yoga is the pause button that humanity needs to breathe, to balance, to become whole again," he said.
