MI and GG, alongside Delhi Capitals, are in a three-way race for the top spot. DC have completed their campaign and are at the top with ten points. MI and GG have both eight points but the former have an extra game in hand. If MI win both games, they will climb to the top. They can be at the top also in the case of only one win but then net run rate would come into the play. Net run rate also will be the differentiator at the top if GG beat MI today.
We are ready to begin. Hayley Matthews and Amelia Kerr with the bat for MI and Deandra Dottin is opening the bowling for GG. The pitch is expected to be a batting paradise. How many runs are we seeing here then?
12 runs off the first over and just five from the second and third combined. It seemed like a great start for MI but GG have pulled things back in a really good fashion. Amelia Kerr was run out as well in the third over trying to steal a single.
Despite a wicket, MI have had a decent powerplay and that is because Hayley Matthews seems to be in a good rhythm today. She is at 26 off 17 balls. So, from the other end, in 19 balls, just 18 runs have come. MI need Nat Sciver-Brunt to start going hard as well.
The ninth over of the innings does bring some momentum back into the MI innings which was stuttering after the powerplay. Hayley Matthews was dismissed in the seventh over and the two overs after the powerplay just went for six runs. But in the ninth over, Nat Sciver Brunt hit two fours while Harmanpreet Kaur struck one to make it a 13-run over.
An important partnership budding between Harmanpreet Kaur and Nat Sciver Brunt. They have now added 41 for the third wicket in 30 balls. GG would want a wicket soon otherwise these two can launch a brutal attack.
Nat Sciver-Brunt is gone but the stage is set for MI to get to 180 here. Harmanpreet Kaur is in the middle with Amanjot Kaur and the duo would want to up the ante now. GG really need the wicket of Harmanpreet quickly to put some pressure back on MI.
An important cameo from Amanjot Kaur has ended but her 15-ball 27 has given MI the impetus they needed to launch the big final attack. Kashvee Gautam continues to impress as she finishes her four-over spell for just 32 runs and a crucial wicket. Harmanpreet is still in the middle. Where can she take MI tonight?
MI finish with 179/6. Harmanpreet Kaur top scores with a brilliant 54. Nat Sciver-Brunt and Amanjot Kaur got crucial 30s. Tanuja Kanwar, Kashvee Gautam, Priya Mishra and captain Ashleigh Gardner all finish with a wicket each to their names.
An interesting choice made by GG Kashvee Gautam has been promoted to open the innings alongside Beth Mooney. Will it work well? Time will tell. Shabnim Ismail with the new ball.
A slow start has cost GG Beth Mooney's wicket. She has been sent back by Hayley Matthews but the new woman Harleen Deol has started in some style by hitting three consecutive boundaries. GG would want some more. The move to send Kashvee Gautam to open has not quite worked as of now.
So the powerplay ends and it was Harleen Deol up against MI bowling as GG openers flopped. Mooney departed early and Kashvee Gautam too could not do much. She scored 10 off 14 balls and put up a lot of pressure on the other end. Deol has raced to 23 off 12 to keep GG in the chase.
The chase has been totally derailed. Post powerplay, GG have added just 17 runs in 18 balls and lost two big wickets. Harleen Deol is gone and before it was the captain Ashleigh Gardner who was sent to pavillion. MI will now look for a really big win.
Half the side gone and GG's chase of 180 is in tatters. MI have been really good with the ball and GG batters have just not been able to find runs consistently. The ones who have like Harleen Deol and Phoebe Litchfield were dismissed before they got dangerous.
Bharti Fulmali is playing a blinder here to keep very slim hopes of GG alive. She has slammed seven fours and two sixes and is batting on 45 off 21. The equation is still very tough though. 55 needed from last four overs.
Bharti Fulmali is gone but her 25-ball 61 has added a lot of spice in the game. Out of nowhere, GG are back in the game but now that Fulmali is back in the dugout can the GG tail wag enough to get the job done?
GG need 23 runs in 12 balls
Mumbai Indians beat Gujarat Giants by nine runs!
Gujarat Giants have been bowled out for 170 and a brilliant innings from Bharti Fulmali goes in vain. Hayley Matthews who had 13 runs to defend in the final over gives away just three and wins MI the game.
Mumbai Indians win by nine runs but Gujarat Giants had no business making things this close. The match was gone but then came Bharti Fulmali and smashed an astonishing 61 off 25 balls to turn the game on its head. However, MI bowlers held their nerves and emerged victorious. Earlier, Harmanpreet Kaur's 54 had taken MI to 179/6 which turned out to be enough.
With the loss, GG's hopes of directly qualifying to the final are over. MI need to win their last match against RCB to finish on top of the standings and get a ticket to final. A loss for MI against RCB and DC will finish on top.
A brilliant match to kick off the Brabourne leg of the tournament and that will be it for today. Thank you.
