The World Hypertension Day is observed each year on May 17 to raise awareness about hypertension, also known as the silent killer. The event will celebrate its 20th anniversary this year with the theme of  "Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer!"

What is Hypertension and Who is at risk?

Hypertension or high blood pressure occurs when the blood pressure in your vessels is very high. The condition is termed hypertension when one바카라™s blood pressure is 140/90 mmHG or higher in terms of systolic pressure.

Individuals who are old, drink excessive alcohol, consume too much salt, are overweight, are physically inactive or possess certain genetic conditions are susceptible to hypertension.

How can hypertension be managed?

According to a recent study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, a naturally-occurring-compound flavan-3-ols that is found in cocoa, tea, grapes and apples has the potential to improve blood pressure and also improve the overall health of blood vessels.

The new study from the University of Surrey collected and analysed data from 145 randomised controlled studies. The study showcased that people with high blood pressure experienced a reduction in their blood pressure after regular consumption of flavan-3-ols. In certain cases, the lowered blood pressure caused due to the compound was congruent with the reduction associated with medicines.

The compound also aided in alleviating the overall cardiovascular health by improving the function of the endothelium, which is the inner-lining of blood vessels.

Professor Christian Heiss, lead-author of the study and Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Surrey asserted that, "While not a replacement for prescribed medications or medical advice, including more flavan-3-ol-rich foods in a daily routine could be a valuable addition to a healthy lifestyle, especially for those with higher blood pressure. These are findings that, although promising, require ongoing investigation," as reported by Science Daily
