A rapidly intensifying pre-monsoon system is sweeping across large parts of India, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of heavy rainfall and potential cyclone development over the Arabian Sea, reports said. As per ANI, a wall collapsed due to heavy rain in Valaiyangulam, Madurai, leading to the death of two women named Ammappillai (age 65) and Vengatti (age 55) and a young boy, Veeramani (age 10).
Bengaluru has already borne the brunt of the weather shift, recording its heaviest May rainfall in two years.
According to the IMD, a low-pressure system is likely to form over the east-central Arabian Sea around May 22 under the influence of an upper air cyclonic circulation. The system is expected to move northwards and may intensify further, impacting weather conditions across South and Central India.
A cyclonic wind pattern has already been detected at an altitude of around 1.5 km, stretching from southern Gujarat to the northeastern Arabian Sea. This atmospheric disturbance is projected to affect states including Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh until May 23. The IMD also noted the potential development of a second cyclonic system in the Arabian Sea around the same time, which could further intensify rainfall activity.

The IMD warned of "heavy to very heavy" rainfall in affected states and advised residents to stay alert to possible flooding, waterlogging, and localized disruptions.
While the primary impact zone is in the south, northern states including Delhi, western Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Uttarakhand are also experiencing cloudy skies and gusty winds. Light showers and breezy conditions were reported in Delhi earlier this week.
With cyclone conditions brewing over the Arabian Sea, the IMD continues to monitor the situation closely and will issue further advisories as the weather system evolves.
