Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par, is all set to hit the theatres this week, on June 20. Ahead of its theatrical release, Aamir said that he will not release his film on OTT platforms just eight weeks after it releases in theatres. As per trade analyst Komal Nahta, Aamir has turned down an OTT deal for the film.
Aamir Khan turns down OTT release offer for Sitaare Zameen Par?
Komal said that Aamir Khan has rejected an offer of Rs 120 crore from streaming platform, Amazon Prime Video for its OTT release. Nahta who writes for Film Information said that the actor took the decision "not because he wanted more, not because he wanted Netflix to bid higher for the film and thereby engage the two OTT platforms in a bidding war so that he could be the ultimate beneficiary, not for any similar reason. He politely said 'no' because he has decided to try and change the game".
Why Aamir rejected the offer?
Instead of spending money and watching a film in theatres, audiences watch it on an OTT platform, after its theatrical release, and that's what Aamir wants to change, as per Nahta. "A film is meant for the big screen 바카라” and Aamir would have it no other way....Frankly, Amazon Prime바카라™s offer was too lucrative for anyone to turn down바카라¦If this non-availability of his film on OTT indeed increases footfalls in cinemas, it may not just revive the industry and give box-office business the much-needed boost but it could also start a trend of either producers emulating Aamir Khan바카라™s example or at least the industry as a whole revisiting the issue of when to release a film digitally," he added.
He also said that Aamir will face a loss of Rs 120 crore, if "the footfalls do not increase substantially" for the film.
