Robert Benton, the Oscar-winning filmmaker, breathed his last on Sunday, May 11, at his Manhattan home. He was 92. As per a report in Associated Press, his son John Benton confirmed that Robert died of "natural causes".
In his 40-year career, Benton received six Oscar nominations and won three times: for writing and directing Kramer vs. Kramer (1979) and for writing Places in the Heart (1984). Despite dyslexia, he also wrote and directed film adaptations of novels by Philip Roth, E.L. Doctorow and Richard Russo, among others.
In the 1960s, Benton served as an art director for Esquire magazine.
He also wrote Superman and What바카라s Up, Doc? and directed and co-wrote Bad Company, and The Late Show. He received an Oscar nomination for screenplay of The Late Show.
Benton rose to fame in 1979 with his adaptation of the Avery Corman novel Kramer vs. Kramer. The movie starred Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep, and clinched five Academy Awards, including best picture.
Benton was back to the Oscars after five years. This time he came with a personal film, titled, Places in the Heart, set in 1930, with family stories and childhood memories.
In 1984, Benton told The Associated Press that the movie was in part a tribute to his mother, who had died before the release of Kramer vs. Kramer. 바카라I think that when I saw it all strung together, I was surprised at what a romantic view I had of the past,바카라 he said.
Apart from delivering several hits, he also had some failures such as Billy Bathgate, The Human Stain and Twilight.
His 1994 comedy, Nobody바카라s Fool, starring Paul Newman, was a success. Based on Russo바카라s novel, it was nominated for Oscar for best adapted screenplay.
In 2003, Benton directed The Human Stain, starring Anthony Hopkins and Nicole Kidman, and Feast of Love in 2007, with Morgan Freeman and Radha Mitchell.
Robert Benton was born on September 29, 1932, in Dallas and raised in Waxahachie. He studied at the University of Texas and Columbia University, and served in the US Army from 1954 until 1956. In 1964, he married Sallie Rendigs in 1964. They had one son.
