Abdur Rehman Rahi was a Kashmir poet, translator, and critic. He was one of the foremost exponents of Kashmiri literature and he authored a dozen books and translations. He was also awarded with the prestigious Jnanpith Award and the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship.Â
Rahi died on Monday at the age of 98. He was an influential figure in Kashmir바카라™s literary scene.Â
Dr Huzaifa Pandit has translated a poem by Rahi below.Â
All awareness severed,
Surroundings throbbed in my insides
Its call silenced; voice muted
The shrinking rivulet blurs before the cicada 바카라“
Drowsiness has extracted its due.Â
Wings muffled,Â
Sulking shadows in tearing hurry
The sky claws at its wounds futilelyÂ
and the breeze stilled by languorÂ
Pestilence stricken toys slip outÂ
from feeble hands 바카라”
lost without a trace.Â
Where have gone those 바카라” thoseÂ
tormented by desire?
Every twig, every bough was bedecked
with tinsel. Â Â Â
Now a feeble ray is left at my tipÂ
바카라” eyes expectant, lain in wait for NavrozÂ
When spring will again stretch its arms
And summer run riot with colour
and tempestuous fragranceÂ
Heir of epochs.
What then if sunshine is lostÂ
and darkness begins to weave its snare?
I will not doze.Â
Dust hovering in the breezeÂ
has receded 바카라” a grain at a time.Â
Evening shadows brew scheming whispers.Â
The lone apple of my eyes 바카라” this naïve rayÂ
will also find a pretext.Â
See! How fair, how comely, how intent
Yet when dark has extracted its due,
Who will speak out for it?
Eyes groping in the dark
Hands bereft, numbÂ
A circle without a centre.Â
