Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney on Wednesday said that his government is in conversation with the United States regarding joining the Golden Dome missile defense program.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced the Golden Dome - worth $175 billion system - which would be the first case of the U.S. installing weapons in space, which Trump said would be fully functional by the end of 2029, the end of his second term, AP reported.
The decision for the dome comes after the Pentagon has been warning for years that the latest Chinese and Russian missiles are so advanced that the U.S. needs to update countermeasures as well.
Golden Dome will be able to function in four ways to stop a potential attack: by detecting and destroying the missiles before launch, intercepting them in the initial stage of take off, stopping them in the middle or terminating them in the final moments as they come down on the target.
"Is it a good idea for Canada? Yes, it is a good to have protections in place for Canadians," Carney said.
Carney said that he was in talks with Trump about the Golden Dome, besides the discussions with senior officials. Trump too said that the Canadian government had contacted his administration about the dome, and that he will work with Canada to see that it contributes its 바카라fair share,바카라 as per AP.
바카라It바카라s something that we are looking at and something that has been discussed at a high level." Carney said. 바카라But not I바카라m not sure one negotiates on this. These are military decisions that have been taken in that context, and we will evaluate it accordingly.바카라
바카라Is Canada going to be doing this alone or with the United States? Because with a Golden Dome, there will be discussions that could have an impact on Canada, but Canada wouldn't be a part of them,바카라 Carney said.
The main cost of the program lies in attempts to stop the missiles in the early or middle of the flights through Golden Dome바카라s added satellites and interceptors. Canada and the United States are partners in the North American Aerospace Defense Command, the combined organization that provides shared defense of airspace over the two nations, as per AP.
