Myanmar Earthquake: Death Toll Reaches 1,644, Over 3,408 Injured; 139 Remain Missing

On Saturday, India is sending around 15 tonnes of relief materials in a military transport aircraft to earthquake-hit Myanmar, as per PTI.

The relief materials being sent include tents, sleeping bags, blankets, ready-to-eat meals, water purifiers, solar lamps, generator sets and essential medicines, the sources said.

Commenting on the cause behind the large-scale natural disaster that led to extensive damage, India's earthquake monitoring agency, the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), has said the earthquake caused severe damage because its shaking matched the natural vibration of buildings.

Moreover, soil liquefaction was also a major cause of the damage, said O P Mishra, head of the NCS.

NCS also said that besides soil liquefaction, the earthquake was also caused by the Sagaing Fault, a major fault line located 1,200 km east of the Indo-Burma subduction zone. The energy from the earthquake spread towards Bangkok.

Soil liquefaction is defined as a phenomenon when the ground starts acting like a liquid instead of solid land during a strong earthquake.

Citing NCS, PTI reported that soil liquefaction happens at places with loose, wet soil like sandy areas near rivers or the coast. When the earthquake shakes the ground, the water between the soil particles pushes them apart, making the soil lose its strength. As a result, buildings, roads and other structures may sink, tilt or collapse, Mishra explained.

Bangkok is not generally considered to be at significant risk for earthquakes. The city is located in a region that is not near major tectonic plate boundaries, where most of the world's seismic activity occurs. Thailand, including Bangkok, does experience occasional small tremors, but these are relatively rare and typically not strong enough to cause major damage.

The country does have some fault lines, especially in the northern and western regions, but they are far from Bangkok.

Citing state media, CNN reported that Myanmar바카라�s junta chief, Min Aung Hlaing, visited the city of Mandalay on Saturday to inspect the extent of damage brought by the earthquake.

Citing government data, the Associated Press reported that the death toll from a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar has jumped to nearly 700, according to the government.

India on Saturday sent around 15 tonnes of relief materials in a military transport aircraft to earthquake-hit people of Myanmar.

India sent the relief materials to Yangoon in a C130J military transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force.

In view of the devastating consequences of the earthqauke in Myanmar, Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Saturday offered his condolences to the leader of Myanmar바카라�s military junta Min Aung Hlaing, Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported.

As per the state broadcaster, China said it was sending search and rescue teams to Myanmar to assist relief efforts, with one group arriving in Yangon on Saturday morning 바카라� the first international rescue team to arrive in the country.

Citing state media MRTV, CNN reported that the death toll from Friday바카라�s 7.7-magnitude earthquake in Myanmar has risen to at least 1,002 poeple while over 2,300 people are injured.

The figures were for 바카라�all the earthquake-affected areas nationwide,바카라� the broadcaster said.

As a consequence of the deadly quake on Friday, reports highlighted over 2000 structural cracks in Bangkok buildings.

바카라�Safety is our top priority,바카라� Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said in a statement while adding, 바카라�Despite the collapse of one under-construction building, no completed buildings have suffered structural failure.바카라�

CNN reported quoting him that the cracks were primarily reported in the inner city, where high-rise buildings are concentrated. To ensure workplace safety in high-rise buildings on Monday, all inspections will be expedited over the weekend, Chadchart said.

According to a report by BBC, rescue officials at the site of a collapsed building in Bangkok reportedly said that at least 15 people are alive and trapped underneath the rubble.

The rescue work at the particular spot is very difficult as the parts of the building is still collapsing and the rescue workers they are refraining from using heavy machinery for now to pull people out to avoid further inconvenience.

According to CNN, several countries have deployed rescue teams in Myanmar in an attempt to boost relief operations.

According to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, Chinese team was the first international rescue group to reach Myanmar바카라�s biggest city Yangon on Saturday morning followed by the same frm Russia.

India on Saturday also sent a rescue and medical team, along with urgent humanitarian aid, its External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said on X Saturday.

Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia also pledged to send rescue teams.

Myanmar's military regime says it has opened a temporary hospital and relief camp at Mandalay Airport.

How many people it can treat and care for has not been specified.

The airport is not currently functional, with the runways damaged during the earthquake, but the military says it is working to resume flights.

India is sending a contingent of 80 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel to Myanmar, in order to aid the relief and rescue work in the region, a day after an earthquake of 7.7 magnitude hit the country, followed by an aftershock. The personnel, being sent under 바카라�Operation Brahma바카라� will carry equipment like strong concrete cutters, hammers and drill machines to facilitate the search operations.

Another earthquake of 5.1 magnitude struck near Myanmar's Naypyidaw a day after deadly tremors.

King Charles III has sent a message of condolence to the people of Myanmar, as yesterday's earthquake has killed more than 1,000 people, according to the country's military.

In a statement, he says: "I know that the people of Myanmar continue to endure so much hardship and tragedy in your lives, and I have long admired your extraordinary resilience and spirit.

"At this most difficult and heartbreaking of times, my wife and I send our deepest possible sympathy to all those who have suffered the profound tragedy of losing their loved ones, their homes and their precious livelihoods."

Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra the country 바카라�has returned to normalcy바카라� after a deadly quake rattled the capital.

Shinawatra said only one building collapsed in Bangkok, adding that the building was under construction and that no other buildings in the capital suffered a similar impact.

바카라�We have tasked the Department of Public Works and Town & Country Planning to investigate as to what happened [to the collapsed building] and what would be the future standards,바카라� said the PM.

Rescue workers in Thailand바카라�s capital, Bangkok, have found signs of life beneath the rubble of a 30-storey tower block that collapsed due to the earthquake, local media say.

About 15 people are trapped under the debris of the high-rise building, which was under construction. They are in groups of three to seven, several media outlets reported, quoting authorities.

Suriyachai Rawiwan, director of the national disaster relief organisation, said rescuers are trying to bring them water and food. But some of the survivors are trapped several metres below the surface.

바카라�We have about 72 hours to help them because that is the approximate time a person can survive without water and food,바카라� Rawiwan said, according to radio station Thai PBS.

It is still unclear exactly how many people are buried under the remains. People are waiting outside the site for news of their relatives, but the police have asked the public to avoid gathering at the building so as not to hinder rescue work that involves heavy equipment.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday spoke to Min Aung Hlaing, the head of the military-led government in Myanmar, and said India stands in solidarity with the country in dealing with the devastation caused by a massive earthquake there.

Further ships and flights carrying aid to Myanmar are said to follow.

Russia: Putin sent his 바카라�deepest condolences바카라� to the country바카라�s military ruler, according to Tass, Russia바카라�s state-run news agency. Russia has committed to sending planeloads of relief supplies and personnel.

US: President Donald Trump described the quake as 바카라�terrible바카라� and vowed that the US would assist Myanmar. 바카라�It바카라�s a real bad one, and we will be helping. We바카라�ve already spoken with the country,바카라� he told reporters.

Others sending aid include the European Union, which has pledged 2.5 million euros ($2.7 million) in initial emergency aid, as well as South Korea, Malaysia, and Singapore.
