Pakistan has recently promoted its Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir to its highest military designation of field marshal. The promotion makes him the second such officer to achieve the rank in the nation바카라™s history. The General has been a topic of contention since the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives.

Who is Asim Munir?

Rather than hailing from Pakistan's military academy, General Asim Munir graduated through the Officer바카라™s Training School. He rose through the ranks and subsequently gained several prominent roles.

Munir was promoted to the rank of Chief of Army Staff in 2022. He had earlier served as the chief of the two most powerful intelligence agencies, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and the Military Intelligence (MI). However, his stint as the chief of ISI was short lived as he was replaced by Lt Gen Faiz Hamid within eight months on the recommendation of the then Prime Minister Imran Khan in 2019. According to reports, Munir had notified Khan of his new wife-to-be being allegedly implicated in corruption. This suspension led to a bitter battle between the PM and the Generals.

He subsequently entered into a tussle with Imran Khan where he allegedly purged the army of his supporters.

Munir has always held a hardline stance against India. He is a believer of the two-nation theory which states that the Muslims of Pakistan fundamentally cannot live in the same country as Hindus. This was made even clearer in his statements last month when tensions between both nations were on the rise. 바카라œOur religions are different, our cultures are different, our traditions are different, our thoughts are different, our ambitions are different,바카라 he said.

General Ayub Khan was the last and only other officer to hold the rank of Field Marshal. Khan, who seized power in 1958 through a military coup, elevated himself to the position a year later.
