The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued heavy to very heavy rainfall across parts of Northeast India over the next two days, warning residents of potential weather-related disruptions. The intensity of rainfall is expected to decrease gradually after June 3, although light to moderate showers are likely to persist in the region for most of the coming week.
According to the IMD bulletin, widespread rainfall is expected across Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura through June 7, with isolated heavy to very heavy showers forecast for June 3, and isolated heavy rainfall likely on June 4 and 5.
In addition to the rains, the region may also experience thunderstorms accompanied by squally or gusty winds, with speeds reaching 70바카라“100 kmph at isolated locations in Assam, Meghalaya, and parts of northwestern India. The IMD has urged residents and local administrations to remain vigilant, especially in vulnerable areas prone to flooding or landslides.
Some northeastern states remain in the grip of severe floods and landslides triggered by continuous heavy rainfall, with the overall death toll rising to 36 and over 5.5 lakh people affected as of Monday. With 11 deaths, Assam is the worst-hit state, HT reported. Arunachal Pradesh recorded 10 fatalities, Meghalaya six, Mizoram five, Sikkim three, and Tripura one in the current spell of flooding across the region.
Authorities have been asked to issue necessary advisories and ensure preparedness in case of waterlogging, damage to infrastructure, or disruption in transportation and power supply.
Precautionary measures have been recommended for fishermen and outdoor workers, with strong wind warnings in place over the Brahmaputra Valley and adjoining hills. Travelers have also been advised to check weather updates before planning any inter-state travel across Northeast India.
Sikkim Landslide
At least three people, including two army personnel, died while six other security personnel went missing after a landslide hit a military camp at Chhaten in Sikkim, a defence official said on Monday. Sikkim has been battered by heavy rain in the last few days.
Officials told PTI that the landslide, which occurred at 7 pm on Sunday, was triggered by heavy rainfall in the area. Three bodies have been recovered so far, while four individuals were rescued with minor injuries, the defence official said in a statement.
