At least 11 people were killed in a stampede as cricket fans gathered to celebrate the victory of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) - a team with a massive fan-following that won the Indian Premier League for the first time.
The dead reportedly include three teenagers - the youngest of whom was 13. All victims were under the age of 40. 33 people were injured as well.
The incident occured at the Chinnaswamy Stadium - which has the capacity of around 35,000. However, the crowd is estimated to have exceeded 3 lakh people.
The Karnataka High Court has taken suo-moto cognizance of the matter and will be hearing the case on June 5. The Karnataka government will also formulate a new Standard Operating Procedure for the purpose of mega events, meetings and celebrations aimed at preventing any untoward incidents.
The tragedy cast a shadow over RCB바카라™s historic trophy win, their first since the championship began.
While a war-of-words has ensued between the ruling Congress party in Karnataka and the Bharatiya Janata Party, the incident serves as a grim reminder of the recurring stampedes in India - often attributed to overpopulation, lack of civic discipline, poor urban planning, and inadequate crowd control - yet, in the end, no one is held accountable.
The past year has seen multiple major stampedes, each resulting in significant loss of life.
Hathras Stampede:
On July 2, last year, a crowd of at least 2.5 lakh devotees gathered in Phulari village, Hathras, to attend a religious sermon by Suraj Pal Singh - a self-proclaimed godman who went by the name 바카라˜Bhole Baba바카라™.
A deadly stampede broke out, killing 121 people. The crowd at Bhole Baba바카라™s sermon swelled to three times the permitted limit - who later blamed "anti-social elements" for the chaos.
Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav on January 6 argued at the Allahabad High Court that such incidents were the result of poor arrangements made by the organisers.
"The organisers call innocent people for their benefit and due to lack of proper arrangements, such incidents happen. It is the responsibility of the administration to see whether there is proper arrangement of police force, medical, etc., or not," the judge said
Preliminary reports suggested that the stampede began when his security allegedly pushed back devotees trying to touch his feet, while others claim it started when followers ran after his departing cavalcade.
Kumbh Mela Stampede:
At the Maha Kumbh Mela 바카라” a pilgrimage attended by sadhus, ascetics, the Prime Minister, President, and Home Minister of India, along with Bollywood celebrities like Katrina Kaif and international pop star Chris Martin 바카라” a stampede in January this year left at least 30 dead and 60 injured.
The stampede occurred late at night where people had gathered to take a holy dip in the waters of the confluence of rivers, on the festival's most auspicious day. The six-week-long festival was visited by thousands of devotees on a daily basis.
The Maha Kumbh is considered the most important event in the Hindu religious almanac as the religious gathering takes place every 144 years based on a particular celestial alignment of the sun, moon, and Jupiter.
New Delhi Railway Station Stampede:
At least 18 people were killed and more than a dozen injured in a stampede that broke out late February 15 this year at the New Delhi Railway Station - the main and one of the busiest railways stations in the country.
The stampede was preceded by a swell in crowd of passengers waiting to board trains to Prayagraj - where the Maha Kumbh was underway - on platform numbers 14 and 15 of the station.
"As per CMI, every hour 1,500 general tickets were sold by railways due to which the station got overcrowded and became uncontrollable. There was a stampede at platform no. 14 and near escalator near platform no. 16," the DCP said.
Goa Stampede:
At least six people died while 75 others sustained injuries after a stampede during the Shri Lairai Zatra in Goa바카라™s Shirgao on May 3, 2025.
The committee investigating the cause of the stampede concluded that the tragedy was entirely preventable and stemmed from a combination of poor planning, lack of enforcement, ignored directives, and inadequate infrastructure. The recommendations provided in the report aim to ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future.
The Committee also mentioned that the immediate cause of the stampede was overcrowding on the pathway from Tali to Homkhand, particularly at the upper end of the sloped section near the RBL Bank Branch, Shirgao, aggravated by the unruly behaviour of the Dhonds and lack of proper crowd control measures at that location. As one person fell, it triggered a chain reaction, leading to chaos and a stampede.
