17 people have been evacuated out of the 64 tourists who were stranded at Chaten in north Sikkim after a landslide. The rescue operation resumed on Friday morning,
The evacuated tourists were brought to Pakyong by a helicopter, PTI reported.
"A helicopter successfully carried out the first evacuation of the day, airlifting 17 individuals from Chaten to Greenfield Airport, Pakyong," an official said.
Around 47 people remain to be rescued. Three helicopters took off from the Pakyong Greenfield Airport for the operation. The area was hit by a landslide earlier this week.
The rescue operation had to be briefly suspended earlier due to bad weather conditions and challenging terrain on Thursday, as per PTI.
Three army personnel were killed, six soldiers went missing and several others were injured after a landslide hit a military camp at Chaten on the evening of June 1. The missing soldiers have not been found yet.
Weather conditions in the region have calmed down after almost a week of red and orange alerts forecasting heavy rains and high-speed winds across Sikkim and larger north-east India.
There are no warnings declared by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) for the upcoming week in Sikkim.
However, as per the department, heavy to very heavy rainfall was recorded at isolated places over Tripura and over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh and Assam in the past 24 hours.
Assam is reeling under the aftermath of the flood, with over 5.6 lakh people experiencing the deluge in 16 districts, PTI reported.
As many as 21 have been killed in this year바카라™s floods and landslides, with two more deaths reported on Thursday.
Additionally, 70% of the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in Morigaon district is facing inundation.
As per Assam State Disaster Management Authority bulletin, 5,61,644 people are affected from the flood, with more than 41,000 displaced taking shelter in 175 relief camps.
In Arunachal Pradesh, 12 people have died due to landslides and floods after torrential rain this year. At least 214 villages with a total population of 33,200 were affected. Most of the major rivers and their tributaries are in high spate but flowing below the normal level as of now, PTI reported on Thursday.
481 houses were damaged across the state. 432 livestock deaths were reported, including 335 poultry and 97 animals so far.
In Meghalaya, no progress has been made in the search operation for Sonam Raghuvanshi, a tourist from Indore whose husband was found dead in a gorge a few days ago, in East Khasi Hills district, PTI reported on Thursday.
As for the national capital Delhi, IMD has predicted a mostly clear sky for the next seven days with no heat wave condition. IMD has also forecasted light to moderate rainfall for Mumbai on June 6.
