Maharashtra Day or Maharashtra Diwas is celebrated on May 1 to honour the day on which the state was formed after being separated from Gujarat. The state was created by breaking off the Bombay State after widespread protests and demonstrations. On May 1,1960, the Bombay Reorganisation Act was implemented granting separate states to the Marathi-speaking and the Gujarati-speaking populace.

Despite the State Reorganisation Act of 1956 defining states on the basis of language, both these states formed one state as it housed diverse linguistic groups including Marathi, Gujarati, Konkani and Kutchi. Samyukta Maharashtra Andolan was a movement which was launched to get a separate state for the Marathi-speaking people. The demand got the parliament바카라s assent in April 1960.

The day celebrates Maharashtra's rich heritage, honour those who died in the protests and preserve the Marathi culture.

While speaking of Maharashtra's importance, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, 바카라Maharashtra Day greetings to the people of the state, which has always played a vital role in India바카라s development. When one thinks of Maharashtra, its glorious history and the courage of the people come to our mind. The state remains a strong pillar of progress and at the same time has remained connected to its roots. My best wishes for the state바카라s progress.바카라

Gujarat, another state that was formed on this day owing to the Mahagujarat movement celebrates it as the Gujarat Gaurav Divas.
