Mitchell Marsh became the first overseas batter to score a century in the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League when he struck his maiden IPL ton against Gujarat Giants on Thursday. (Match Blog)
Marsh reached his century, which is his second in T20s, in 56 balls and scored 117 in 64 deliveries before departing in the 19th over. His century propelled Lucknow Super Giants to 235/2 in 20 overs against table-toppers GT.
Marsh started tentatively but once he got his eye in, he was severe on GT bowling attack. The game-changing moment came in the 12th over when GT skipper Shubman Gill introduced Rashid Khan into the attack. The Australian hit the Afghan for 25 runs in the over to give LSG a massive boost and they never looked back from that moment.
Marsh had been part of IPL since 2010 but the highest he had scored in a season was 251 in 2022 for Delhi Capitals. He had only three half-centuries in IPL before this season. The ongoing season is easily his best and the Australian is competing for Orange Cap with 560 runs so far with a game left.
Interestingly, the century also made Mitchell Marsh and Shaun Marsh the first sibling pair to have tons in IPL. Marsh had scored a century in the inaugural season in 2008 for Kings XI Punjab when he claimed the Orange Cap.
