On the back of centuries from Steve Smith and Travis Head, Australia resumed at 405-7, and added 40 runs to their tally either side of rain delays.

Alex Carey took his knock to 70, before he was the last man out for Australia.

Further rain pushed back India's response. When they finally got back to it, Yashasvi Jaiswal (four) was dismissed when he was caught at mid-wicket after just two balls.

Shubman Gil (one) and Virat Kohli (three) then went as the tourists slipped to 22-3.

Rishabh Pant (nine) followed before KL Rahul (33 not out) and Rohit Sharma (0 not out) steadied the ship, taking India to 51-4 at stumps.

Data Debrief: Bumrah reaches half-century Down Under

By sending Mitchell Starc packing, Jasprit Bumrah claimed his 50th Test wicket in Australia after 2,141 deliveries, with only Brett Lee (2,061) and Richard Hadlee (2,117) reaching the half-century in fewer deliveries in the country.

After finishing with 6-76, he registered his 12th Test five-for, moving ahead of Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma to outright second among Indian pacers, with only Kapil Dev (23) notching more.
