Elina Svitolina saved three match points before staging a stunning comeback to knock last year's French Open runner-up Jasmine Paolini out in the last 16.
Paolini, who arrived at Roland-Garros among the favourites after claiming the Italian Open title in Rome, was on the brink of victory at 6-4 5-4 up on Sunday.
But Svitolina saved two match points at that stage, then another in a tense second-set tie-break, before fighting back to complete a thrilling 4-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-1 victory.
Svitolina, who is now 18-2 on clay this year, last won a match at WTA Tour-level after facing match point in 2021, when she fended off two to beat Petra Kvitova at the Stuttgart Open.
The Ukrainian will face Iga Swiatek or Elena Rybakina in the last eight, having booked her 13th quarter-final appearance at a grand slam, and her fifth since returning from maternity leave in 2023.
Since Svitolina reached her first major quarter-final, at Roland-Garros in 2015, only Serena Williams (16) has reached the last eight at more grand slams in the women's game.
Data Debrief: Svitolina roars back
Svitolina's success was her first after facing match point in a grand slam match, in her 150th outing at the majors.
With Paolini looking spent after a gruelling second set, Svitolina dominated the decider and took her first match point opportunity, beating her opponent with a thumping backhand to the left corner.
