Delhi Weather: 4 Dead, 7 Injured Due To Tree Felling, Wall Collapse Across Delhi; CM Rekha Gupta Reviews Situation

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a red alert has been issued for today in Delhi, with severe thunderstorms and squally winds between 70-80 kmph. Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) along a few airlines have issued separate advisories for passengers.

4 people were killed and one injured after a tree fell on a tubewell room built on the farm in Kharkhari Canal village in Dwarka, due to strong winds this morning.

The deceased are identified as 26-year-old Jyoti and her three children. Her husband, Ajay, has sustained minor injuries, Delhi Police told ANI

Incessant torrential rainfall coupled with thunderstorms and gusty winds lashed Delhi and its adjoining areas in the National Capital Region (NCR) early on Friday.

The inconvenient weather condition significantly impacted flight operations from Delhi airport. Besides, waterlogging and power cut has been reported across parts of the national capital region, as per media reports.

The inclement weather condition affected fight operations significantly. According to the Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), which operates the airport, some flights were affected owing to inclement weather conditions.

The Delhi airport issued an advisory on X, saying that some flights had been impacted due to the inclement weather in the national capital. Passengers have been advised to contact their respective airlines for updated flight information.

"Our on-ground teams are diligently working with all stakeholders to ensure a seamless and efficient passenger experience," DIAL said in a post on X.

Delhi CM Rekha Gupta assesses situation at Majnu Ka Tilla as heavy rainfall lashes the national capital.

A metal structure collapsed at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI)Airport's Terminal 3 as heavy rain accompanied by strong winds lashed national capital.

Visuals of heavy waterlogging in Subroto Park area of Delhi surfaced. Heavy rainfall caused waterlogging across several other parts of the city.

In view of the inclement weather conditions in Delhi-NCR, IndiGo airlines issued an advisory for the passengers.

"Following the advisory issued by India Meteorological Department this morning, we would like to confirm that the airport is operating as normal, despite some impact on flight operations due to adverse weather conditions", the advisory read

"Our on-ground teams are diligently working with all stakeholders to ensure a seamless and efficient passenger experience. Passengers are requested to stay in touch with their respective airlines for the latest flight updates", they further added.

Air India in its advisory wrote, "Thunderstorms and gusty winds have affected flight operations in parts of Northern India. Some of our flights to and from Delhi are being delayed, which is likely to impact our overall flight schedule."

"We are doing our best to minimise disruptions. We advise our guests to check the latest status of their flights here before heading to the airport", they added.

As per media reports, around 120 flights delayed this morning due to adverse weather conditions.

NDTV reported that three flights were diverted to Ahmedabad and Jaipur ahead of their arrival at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International airport. A Bangalore-Delhi and another Pune-Delhi flights were among those diverted to Jaipur.

The Delhi airport is currently witnessed average delays of 17 minutes for arrivals and 50 minutes for departures, as per FlightRadar.

Taking cognisance of the inconveniences faced by the commuters, Delhi CM Rekha Gupta says, "Thousands of people in Delhi are stuck in traffic jams and to set this situation right, people of the government are working hard. It is our responsibility to set all the arrangements right with time."

Several parts of Gurugram witnesses heavy traffic as early morning rainfall triggers waterlogging in various parts of the city.

Several cars and a portion of a house were damaged as a tree was uprooted in Delhi's Sheikh Sarai area following heavy rainfall.

A 28-year-old woman and her three children died when a house collapsed in Delhi's Najafgarh following heavy rains in the national capital Friday morning, officials said.

A tree fell on the house following strong gusty winds that accompanied rains in the city, causing it to collapse, they said. Visuals from the spot.

Expressing concern over the death of 4 people in Najafgarh, Delhi CM Rekha Gupta said, "The news of the tragic death of four members of a family and injury to one person due to falling of a tree during heavy storm and rain in Kharkhadi Nahar village, Najafgarh is extremely distressing", Delhi CM Rekha Gupta said.

"I pay tribute to the departed souls and express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families. I pray to God to give the bereaved family the strength to bear this unbearable loss and grant the injured person a speedy recovery. The Delhi government stands with the victim's family in this difficult time. The district administration has been instructed to provide all necessary assistance immediately", she added.

Several flights were diverted and over 200 flights were delayed at the Delhi airport on Friday morning due to inclement weather.

A police told PTI that in Dwarka's Chhawla area, 41-year-old Omprakash (41) and his two sons Love (13) and Saurabh (15) have received minor injuries in a wall collapse.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Ankit Singh said at 5.26 am, a PCR call was received reporting the house collapse. When police reached the spot, it was found that due to strong winds, a neem tree had fallen on a room built in Kharkhari Nahar village near Jaffarpur Kalan in Dwarka district, causing it to collapse, Singh said.

Singh added that at 5.30 am, a PCR call was received at Chhawla police station in which three people were injured in a wall collapse at Paparawat village near Prahlad Mandir.

"No serious injury has been reported to any of the three yet. CAT ambulance has taken all three to a hospital. Injured are out of danger," he said.

Power cuts hit homes across Delhi after an early Friday downpour uprooted several trees and electrical installations.

A Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL) spokesperson told PTI it received 22 power cut complaints, which were restored within a few minutes to one hour.

"The thunderstorm, heavy rainfall, and strong winds resulted in power disruptions and caused damages to the power lines with uprooted trees and branches falling onto them. Electricity supply was temporarily suspended in certain areas as a precautionary measure to prevent electrocution," he said.

Himachal Pradesh state capital Shimla and its surrounding area of Jubbarhatti were lashed by hailstorm, while several places in Himachal Pradesh received rains, the weather office said on Friday.

Gusty winds were witnessed in Kufri, Bilapsur, Reckong Peo, Bajura, Narkanada and Tabo while thunderstorm occurred in Shimla, Jubbarhatti, Sundernagar, Jot, Bhuntar, Murari Devi, Kufri and Kangra, the Met said.

Since Thursday evening, Solan received 39 mm of rain followed by Ghaghas 33.8 mm, Raipur Maidan 26.6 mm, Bilapsur 26 mm, Rajgarh 25 mm, Mehre Barsar 25 mm, baggi 22.9 mm, Pachhad 20 mm, Olinda 17.8 mm, Kufri and Neri 17 mm each, Slapper 16.9 mm and Shimla 11 mm.

The Met station has issued an orange alert of hailstorm at isolated places in the state on Friday and orange and yellow warning of thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds with a speed of up to 30-50 kmph till next Thursday.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta termed the pre-monsoon showers on Friday a warning sign for the capital's crumbling infrastructure, blaming it on the "decade-long development backlog" created by the previous AAP government.
