Delhi-NCR: 1 Dead After Roof Collapses Due To Heavy Rains; Police Issues Traffic Advisory After Severe Waterlogging

Delhi and the neighbouring regions were battered due to heavy rains, thunderstorm and strong winds in the late hours of Sunday night after India Meteorological Department issued a red alert to warn citizens for harsh weather.

Several flights scheduled at Delhi airport have been impacted due to the bad weather. They issued a public advisory on Sunday morning stating, "Due to adverse weather conditions last night, some flights have been impacted. Passengers are advised to check their flight status regularly and stay in touch with airline staff for updates."

The heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms also lashed several parts of Haryana's Jhajjar.

Waterlogging In Several Roads Across Delhi

A bus and a car were found submerged in water in the Delhi Cantt area after heavy rains caused severe waterlogging in several parts of the national capital.

Several trees fell due to storms and heavy rainfall last night and the clearance work is underway at the Akbar Road.

Severe waterlogging witnessed in the ITO area, Dhaula Kuan, Subroto Park area, Nanakpura Underpass and also near Delhi airport area.

1 Dead In Ghaziabad

A 58-year-old sub-inspector died early Sunday when the roof of the Assistant Police Commissioner (ACP) Ankur Vihar Loni's office collapsed in rain, an officer told PTI.

Virendra Kumar Mishra was sleeping inside a room and was found buried under the debris.

Additional Police Commissioner Alok Priyadarshi confirmed the incident.

The collapse wasn't discovered till policemen came to the office in the morning. They pulled out Mishra's body from the debris and rushed him to a hospital, where he was declared dead.

His family in Etawah district has been informed, police said. 

Delhi Traffic Advisory

Delhi Traffic Police on Sunday issued multiple traffic advisories in view of the IPL match at Arun Jaitley Stadium and disruptions caused by waterlogging due to heavy rains in parts of the city.

According to the advisory, the traffic movement is expected to be affected around Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium from 5:30 pm to midnight on May 25 due to the IPL match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders. The affected stretches include Bahadurshah Zafar Marg, JLN Marg and Asaf Ali Road.

Buses and heavy vehicles will not be allowed from Daryaganj to Bahadurshah Zafar Marg and from Guru Nanak Chowk to Asaf Ali Road.

The commuters going towards the stadium have been advised to use public transport to avoid congestion, the advisory said.

Due to the overnight thunderstorm and heavy rain, waterlogging has occurred in various areas of the city, leading to advisories in different parts of the city regarding traffic congestion.

"As a result, traffic is restricted at the Azad Market underpass in both directions - from Azad Market towards Pratap Nagar and vice versa - due to waterlogging. Diversions have been implemented," a traffic alert read.

The vehicles coming from Rani Jhansi Road are being diverted towards Barf Khana. Those coming from Barf Khana are being diverted towards Pul Mithai and Idgah. The traffic from Pul Mithai is being sent towards Barf Khana and Rani Jhansi Road, while the vehicles from Vir Banda Bairagi Marg are being diverted towards Old Rohtak Road, it said.

According to another alert, the traffic is also affected on Rohtak Road in both carriageways - from Rajdhani Park towards Mundka and vice versa - due to waterlogging and road repair work being carried out by the Public Works Department.

The commuters have been advised to plan their journeys accordingly.

"Another disruption has been reported on GTK Road in the carriageway from Vikram Batra Flyover towards Azadpur due to waterlogging near Jahangirpuri Metro Station. Police have requested motorists to avoid the stretch and take alternate routes," Delhi Police said in an alert. 

Delhi Airport Flight Operations

Flight operations were disrupted at the Delhi airport early Sunday due to heavy rains and winds.

The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in the national capital is the country's largest airport.

According to PTI, as many as 49 flights, including 17 international ones, were diverted at the country's largest IGI airport here due to the inclement weather. Water logging was also reported at Terminal 3 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport.

In a post on X at 3.59 am, IndiGo said adverse weather conditions over Delhi had led to temporary disruptions in flight operations.

"While the weather is gradually easing, some airside congestion remains. We assure you that flight movements are steadily resuming as conditions permit," the airline said.

In another post at 5.54 am, it said, with clearer skies over Delhi, flight operations are back to normal.

According to information available on flight tracking website Flightradar24.com, many flights have been delayed and some cancelled at the airport, and the average delay was over 30 minutes for departures.

Delhi Airport issued a passenger advisory at 06:50 am saying, "Due to adverse weather conditions last night, some flights have been impacted. Passengers are advised to check their flight status regularly and stay in touch with airline staff for updates."

Power Supply Disrupted

 Power supply was disrupted in many parts of the national capital due to damage caused to electrical installations by the overnight heavy rains and thunderstorm, discoms said on Sunday.

Power supply was disrupted in parts of Bawana, Ghogha village, Sector 25 Rohini, DSIIDC Narela, Sultanpuri, Sector 22 Rohini, Karala, Badli, Siraspur, Avantika, Mangolpuri, RU Block Pitampura and Rithala village among others in north Delhi, said a spokesperson of Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL).

"Our teams were immediately pressed into action and restoration work began on priority. As a safety measure, power supply was also temporarily suspended in some areas and restored once conditions normalised," he added.

The thunderstorm accompanied with heavy rains disrupted flight operations, uprooting trees and electricity poles, and causing waterlogging in several areas.

The India Meteorological Department said the city's primary weather station recorded winds gusting up to 82 kmph and 81.2 mm of rain in six hours -- between 11.30 pm and 5.30 am.

Discoms said that electric lines and poles were damaged with uprooted trees and broken branches falling on them plunging different localities into darkness. 

IMD Warning For Rains & Thunderstorm

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a red alert for Delhi and nearby areas on Saturday evening, warning of strong thunderstorms, rain, and high-speed winds over the next two to three hours.

According to the IMD, a thunderstorm cell was approaching Delhi and adjoining areas from the west/northwest and and it could lead to severe thunderstorm or dust-raising wind activity accompanied by frequent lightning and gusty winds (speed reaching 40-60 km/h or more).

The weather department has also urged residents to take necessary precautions which included - avoiding open spaces, not taking shelter under trees, avoiding weak walls or unstable structures and staying away from water bodies.

Weather In Delhi On Saturday

Delhi on Saturday recorded a maximum temperature of 38.2 degree Celsius, two notches below the season's average, it said.

The minimum temperature was recorded at 28.4 degrees Celsius, 1.7 notch below the season's average, it added.

The relative humidity was recorded at 49 per cent at 5.30 pm. The air quality remained in the "moderate" category at 6 pm on Saturday, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 141, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data showed.
