Mahendra Hembram was released for good behaviour from Odisha's Keonjhar jail after 25 years on 16 April. He was arrested for the murder of an Australian missionary, Graham Staines, and his sons in January 1999.
Hembram, who was 25 at that time, was a member of a mob led by Dara Singh who attacked Graham Staines and his two sons 바카라 11-year-old Philip and 8-year-old Timothy 바카라 while they slept in their station wagon and then set the vehicle on fire in Manoharpur village of Keonjhar district on the intervening night of January 22-23, 1999.
Between 1999 and 2000, a total of 51 people were arrested in connection with the case. Of them, 37 were acquitted during the initial trial.
Fourteen individuals, including Dara Singh and Hembram, were convicted by a designated Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court. Later, the Orissa High Court acquitted 11 more.
Hembram, who is now 50, was released from Odisha바카라s Keonjhar jail, 200 km from here, on the grounds of 바카라good behaviour바카라 on Wednesday.
His release was recommended by the Odisha State Sentence Review Board, and the jail authorities maintained that it was carried out in accordance with the law
A Bench of Justices Manoj Misra and K.V. Viswanathan gave the State government six weeks to decide the convict바카라s plea for remission and report back to the apex court.
As per reports by The Hindu, 'Sixty-one-year-old Singh said he has suffered 24 years of incarceration without remission and truly regretted his actions committed in a fit of 바카라youthful rage바카라, which he blamed on bad karma
"In the fervor of youth, fueled by impassioned reactions to the brutal history of India, the petitioner바카라s psyche momentarily lost restraint,바카라 his plea said.
He promised to 바카라give back to society바카라 through 바카라service-oriented actions바카라. He submitted that he had undergone more than the qualified period of sentence of 14 years under the April 19, 2022, remission policy in Odisha.
바카라The petitioner was never released on parole, even when his mother passed away. He could not perform her last rites,바카라 he submitted.
He was garlanded upon his release, as his supporters raised slogans of 바카라Jai Shri Ram
