IMD Forecasts Heavy Rains, Thunderstorms, Issues Orange Alert Across Several Regions

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued weather alerts for various regions across India. With many regions expecting heavy rains, thunderstorms, strong winds and hailstorms over the next few days.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued weather alerts for various regions across India. The report warns of heavy rainfalls, thunderstorms, and strong winds across various states. 

The IMD has issued an orange alert and a multi-hazard for several states, including Rajasthan, Gujarat, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Telangana, and parts of Andhra Pradesh.

North India: Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh are expected to face strong winds till May 10. 

Northeast India: There are reports of rain, thunderstorms and strong winds over the next 7 days. As a cause of this, temperatures have also dropped 

Eastern India: Rainfall and thunderstorms are expected over Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh and nearby regions.

Western and Central India: In Punjab, Haryana, Gujrat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh, cloudy weather is to be expected, with warnings of lightning, and hailstorms in some places. 

Delhi: Light rain can be accompanied by thunderstorms and strong surface winds, reaching up to 50 km/h.

Maharashtra: The IMD has issued an orange alert for parts of Vidharbha along with a yellow alert for Thane, Palghar, Pune, Nashik, Jalgaon, Satara.

South India: Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala and Tamil Nadu are all to expect lightning and strong winds over the next seven days. 

Cyclonic rotation affects weather by causing the movement and rising of air, which leads to cloud formation, precipitation and storm development. 

  1. An upper air cyclonic circulation is located over South Uttar Pradesh, with a trough extending to Tamil Nadu.

  2. Another upper air cyclonic circulation lies over northern parts of Gangetic West Bengal with a trough extending to Andhra Pradesh 

  3. A cyclonic circulation is also present over the northeast Arabian Sea and coastal areas of Gujarat.

  4. An upper air cyclonic circulation is located over northeast Assam, further influencing the weather pattern.

As per the IMD, the south-west monsoon is expected to advance into the South Andaman Sea, some parts of south-east Bay of Bengal and Nicobar Islands by May 13. With the onset of the monsoon usually being announced by June 1.
