In the latest development in the murder case of Akali Dal councillor Harjinder Singh, the Punjab police arrested four people on Monday.

According to police, one of the accused sustained a bullet injury in retaliatory action after he allegedly opened fire at a police team.

What Did The Police Say?

Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said in a post on X, "In a major breakthrough, Amritsar Commissionerate Police dismantles an organised crime network linked to the foreign-based Kishan Gang. Within 8 hours, four gang operatives were arrested, leading to the swift resolution of the Murder Case of Harjinder Singh @ Bahman (Municipal Councillor, Jandiala Guru)."

"During a chase near Fatahpur, accused Gurpreet Singh @ Gopi opened fire on the police party. In self-defence, SHO Chheharta retaliated with his service weapon, injuring Gopi in the right leg," Yadav added.

The accused was immediately shifted to Civil Hospital, Amritsar, he said, adding, a Glock 9mm pistol has been recovered from him.

Who Was Harjinder Singh?

Harjinder Singh, Shiromani Akali Dal councillor of Ward No. 2 under the Jandiala Assembly constituency, was shot dead on Sunday.

On Sunday, police said three to four persons tried to intercept the councillor, who was on a bike, before firing bullets at him. Singh was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to injuries.

Deteriorating Law And Order In Punjab, Majithia Alleged

A few days ago, Shiromani Akali Dal general secretary Bikram Singh Majithia shared CCTV footage of the attack on Harjinder Singh's house.

He of "deteriorating law and order" in Punjab and alleged that no action was taken when the councillor was threatened and "he was murdered today".

Security footage captures two men walking down a narrow lane around 1 am, one with his face covered and the other holding a phone, as they approach Harjinder Singh's house. The man without the covered face then opens fire.
