Oscar Piastri hailed his McLaren as "mega" after claiming a fourth Formula One pole of 2025 at the Spanish Grand Prix.

It was an impressive run by the Australian, who beat team-mate Lando Norris by 0.209 seconds, having trailed him for most of qualifying.

Norris had been 0.017secs faster than Piastri in the first runs of the third session, partly due to a small slipstream he earned from his team-mate at the start of his lap. However, a stunning final lap saw Piastri open up the gap.

Piastri, who is looking to continue his streak after scoring points in each of the last 34 Grands Prix, recorded the biggest margin the pole-sitter has had all season.

"Very happy. It's been a good weekend so far," Piastri said.

"Didn't start off in the best way, we were struggling a little bit, but last night we found some pace and today the car is mega and feel I have been able to put in some good laps as well.

"This was a pretty miserable scene 12 months ago, so to turn it around in the best way is a great result."

Red Bull's Max Verstappen was third fastest, 0.302secs behind Piastri, with George Russell setting the exact same time, though he starts fourth having completed the lap later.

Lewis Hamilton beat his Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc for only the second time in a qualifying session this year, taking fifth, with Kimi Antonelli between them.

Pierre Gasly, Isack Hadjar and Fernando Alonso rounded out the top 10.

Verstappen had initially been a long way off the pace on his first run in the final session, but leapt up the timesheet on his last lap.

Spain is Verstappen's favourite Grand Prix, though, having reached more podiums (eight) and recorded more victories (four, level with four other races).

He has also won 32 times without starting from pole position.

However, the Dutchman acknowledged he had work to do if he wanted to catch the McLarens on Sunday.

"We were lacking all weekend compared to them [McLaren]. We executed well," Verstappen said.

"Third is where we more or less should be. It's fun. Around here, it's about squeezing everything out of the car.

"I will try my best [on Sunday], but they will be tough to beat."
