India, the defending champions in the tournament, registered a commanding 8-0 victory over Sri Lanka in their Group B opener on Friday (May 9). Danny Meitei Laishram (26th minute, 31st, 50th) netted a hat-trick, while Prashan Jajo (17th, 62nd) bagged a brace in a comprehensive all-round performance. Md Arbash (40th), Omang Dodum (48th), and captain Singamayum Shami (81st) scored one each.
Their opponents Nepal too began their campaign with a thumping win, thrashing Sri Lanka 5-0. The results meant that both India and Nepal have progressed to the semi-finals from the group, while Sri Lanka have been eliminated.
India and Nepal will battle it out for top spot in Group B, with the Blue Colts only needing a draw to emerge as group winners.
The ongoing tournament is the first-ever international football event in Arunachal Pradesh.
