In an unusual trend for respiratory illnesses, India is experiencing an unseasonal spike in COVID-19 cases during the summer months. As of May 31, over 3,300 active cases have been reported across the country, up from 2,710 the previous day.
In the last 24 hours, four new COVID-19-related deaths have been reported바카라one each from Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Karnataka, and Kerala. This brings the total number of fatalities due to the virus to 26 since January 1, 2025. While this marks a slight decline from seven deaths reported the day before, the situation remains under close watch.
Health experts and government officials have expressed concern over the unseasonal spread, which is being attributed to the JN.1 variant. This development has prompted several states to enhance testing, surveillance, and public health responses in anticipation of a possible rise in cases.
Kerala continues to report the highest number of active infections, with 1,147 cases, followed by Maharashtra (424), Delhi (294), and Gujarat (223). Other states such as West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka have also reported more than 100 active cases each.
According to the Union Health Ministry, two deaths have been reported in Delhi so far in 2025, including that of a 60-year-old woman with underlying medical conditions. Kerala has reported five deaths, while Maharashtra leads with seven fatalities, accounting for the highest number this year. In total, 22 deaths have been reported from all states combined.
Union Minister of State for Health and AYUSH (Independent Charge), Prataprao Jadhav, assured the public that the central government is fully prepared to manage any potential escalation.
바카라Both our Central Health Department and the AYUSH Ministry are fully alert and actively monitoring developments across all states. We have spoken with Health and AYUSH Secretaries and other relevant authorities,바카라 said Jadhav.
He added that the infrastructure and systems put in place during previous COVID-19 waves have been reviewed and are ready for deployment if needed.
Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), also addressed the media earlier this week, emphasizing the importance of continued vigilance. He stated that all health agencies are closely observing the trend and urged the public to remain cautious.
The Ministry officials reiterated the importance of adhering to COVID-appropriate behavior and promptly seeking medical attention in case of symptoms, especially for vulnerable populations.
