At least four passengers died and six were injured after falling from a crowded train in Maharashtra바카라™s Thane district on Monday.

Police rushed to the spot and the investigation is underway. The injured were taken to a civic-run hospital in Kalwa - where four of them were pronounced dead upon arrival.

The incident happened during the rush hour while the overcrowded train was traveling towards Katra, between Diva and Kopar railway stations, an official told PTI.

Many people were standing at the doors of the train and at least 10 people fell down from the moving train, he said.

All deceased people were from the age group 35-40 years.

The incident came to light after the guard of a Kasara-bound train spotted the injured individuals and alerted the control room around 9:30 AM, Swapnil Nila, chief public relations officer of the Central Railway told PTI .

While some passengers fell from the crowded train, another express train was passing on the adjoining track, GRP's senior police inspector Archana Dusane told PTI.

It remains unclear from which train the passengers fell, Nila added.

Devendra Fadnavis, Maharashtra바카라™s Chief Minister on X said," It is very unfortunate that a total of 8 passengers fell from a local train between Diva-Mumbra station and some of them lost their lives. I pay my heartfelt tributes to them. We share the grief of their families."

The injured were immediately admitted to Shivaji Hospital and Thane General Hospital and are undergoing treatment. The local administration is coordinating.

"I pray to God that the injured get relief soon. The Railway Department has launched an investigation into the exact cause of this incident," he added.

Naresh Mhaske, a Shiv Sena Lok Sabha member from Thane, said, "The cause of the incident needs to be addressed. How did they fall...was there a crowd, were they pushed, was there a fight," he told a regional news channel.

"One can understand if it was a crowded local train. But in this case, the tragedy happened in a moving express train. The administration also needs to be alert."

Leader of Opposition in the state legislative council Ambadas Danve said that the incident raises questions about railway safety in Mumbai.

"The incident of so many people suddenly getting out of the Pushpak Express and causing an accident is heartbreaking and serious," he posted on X.
